San Diego RC Crawlers

just lookin for fellow crawlers in my town.

The Muscle 10-09-2006 10:32 PM

Hey what's up?
I have a TXT crawler a tlt crawler and a tlt in the works.
I also have an electric offroad track in my backyard in north park.
my stuff is usually down for repairs though.

Turboduck01 10-09-2006 11:45 PM

any in san diego

I have a TLT crawler currently undergoing a tube frame conversion after having a custom machined chassis, and my roommate is in the same process. We should be good to go in about two weeks. We go to SDSU. where do you guys crawl in san diego? We hit up Cowles Mountain

The Muscle 10-11-2006 12:37 AM

I'm starting to think seriousely about a tuber, looking at options.
never crawled at cowles, but i have mnt biked there.
so far i RC in my yard in north park only. and race rc in Santee at family hobbies on missiom george rd. wednesday and friday 7 pm.

where at cowles exactly do you crawl your rc's?

raul duke 10-11-2006 08:57 AM

Hows it. I have just put the finishing touches on a TXT crawler. Up here in Escondido. Found some spots here and there(Lake Dixon) but still lookin for a gem. I have a track in my friends backyard, small and tight but fun to bash on.

Turboduck01 10-11-2006 09:42 AM

We crawled right on the main hiking trail maybe 100 yards from the start of the trail. There are three pretty fun switchbacks in that area. It's definitely not somewhere where you could get a lot of people together (that trail is VERY crowded with people) but one or two rigs and there's no problem. We haven't really looked for anywhere else in the SD area because currently our TLT's are in pieces.
I have some pics and vids of us at cowles mountain under this thread.

I hope you guys can make it up north for our comp series. I know it's
a drive but it is only once a month.

Hopefully this weekend i get a chance to start bending the tubing, and then all i need is to make upper links : )
P.S. The shocks are just laying there because they have no where to be mounted to, in case you think i was on to something that wasnt going to work : )

kmoore 10-13-2006 10:49 AM

i wish mine was that far along. i have the pede tranny on my desk and the tlt box next to it.

quattros 10-13-2006 06:20 PM

Hi guys im in LA Mesa. I have a clod super with home made nn chassis.A tlt with a 4 link with no side chassis plates just kind of fun but seems to work well. A set of clod axles thinking aboat a tuber! I mostly crawl in my yard. Lucky I have lot of good size rocks and rock outcrops:lol: All so had -have RC track on side of house not much use any more.

raul duke 10-16-2006 08:25 AM

Turboduck01 10-16-2006 02:30 PM

looks awesome, how far away is that from san diego?

raul duke 10-16-2006 03:03 PM

About an hour from N. County maybe a little more. Well worth a day trip. "thumbsup"

Turboduck01 10-19-2006 12:17 AM

should be brazing my frame next week, this weekend im out of town. It's looking pretty sweet, i'm extremely excited.

The Muscle 10-19-2006 12:22 AM

Turboduck01 are you making your tube chassis/frame yourself?

Turboduck01 10-19-2006 08:47 AM

the muscle, yup, making all of it myself. I would say the tube frame is about 90% ready for being brazed. Yesterday I narrowed my wheels. Haven't been able to put too much time into recently because of mid terms.

supercrawlerfreak 10-19-2006 09:52 AM

so when's are next gtg. we could all go to Lytle Creek if yall want its about a half hour north of me and probly an hour and a half from you guys. great place to crawl and i think theres 1:1 wheelin too"thumbsup"

kmoore 10-19-2006 08:22 PM

Turboduck01 10-19-2006 10:19 PM

supercrawlerfreak 10-20-2006 02:46 PM

kmoore 10-20-2006 08:03 PM

i wish i new how to post pics i could show you guys. i read the tlt for newbies thread and am going stock/semi mod for now. i am ordering the links tonight so i am stuck till they show up. my biggest catch will be drive shafts. any thoughts?

The Muscle 10-20-2006 08:20 PM

you need help child.
Links are very simple to make with threaded rod and metal tubing and do-bro link ends.
as for drive shafts traxxas stampede shafts work. you may need to slightly modify them, but it is easy too.
hope this helps. i live close to you in El Cajon, I'm in North Park.

kmoore 10-20-2006 08:30 PM

well i already ordered the links. i have a set of stampede shafts already. maybe we can get together and you can school me.

raul duke 10-20-2006 09:52 PM

Just finishing up work on a TLT crawler to go along with my TXT. I am ready to hit some rocks. Glad to lend a hand and any spare parts.

thanx for the offer. i cant wait to get it done so i can hit the rocks

Turboduck01 10-21-2006 10:36 AM

raul duke, lets see some pics : )

i think the biggest weak link i have seen on my tlt is the chassis plate i use to bolt in the tranny. It's essentially a piece of scrap metal that you can buy in the roofing section of home depot. It seems strong enough, but because it is so thin, My screws hang out and will be really easy to get snagged and what not. What are you guys using for your skid plate? I've heard about the delrin, and perhaps i will do that if i cant find a better alternative and my current stuff dies , but i think the biggest issue for my roommate (who is also building) and i has been finding a decent chassis plate.

The Muscle 10-21-2006 12:39 PM

i like to use cuttingboard for skidplate. It is thick enough to countersink your screws into for a flush fit.

and Kmoore, age is relative. what is old?

kmoore 10-21-2006 02:13 PM

i am using the stock chassis. i think you should be able to build a capable beginer crawler out of it even if the belt slips and all. i just want too have fun right now. i have the pede tranny waiting for a chassis when that time comes.

kmoore 10-21-2006 02:16 PM

hey muscle age is all in your head if you feel old you will act old. i can tell that you are young still at heart, come on you still play with toys !!!!!!!!!!

The Muscle 10-21-2006 07:16 PM

Kmoore "thumbsup"

Don and I spent the day racing our t4's in my backyard, it was a blast.
My TLT "the borrego" is still waiting for the motor can to come back from Holmes Hobbies before it is ready to go. My TXT just needs to have the servo installed for rear steer and it is ready. And the other TLT I'm building is coming along nicely, it is a complete roller today.
Tomorrow I'm going surfing."thumbsup"
