:lmao:

Man that was amazing in car camera action.

The penalties for the safety car incident were pretty light IMO. I was surprised how little it impacted the finishing positions.

:flipoff: no smile!

I'll go ya one better...

When the hell did they get off the 107% rule? It went into place right after I got into F1 in the late 80's. It's how I learned what a 107% rule is. It's a proper and good idea. There a number of drivers out there who have no business on the track. They're just only on teams for political reasons because Bernie made a deal with some such country's minister of sport....and now we have a race there....at a dull new facility. There are drivers out there qualifying at 7 - 10 seconds off pole! WTF? I can run that kind of pace....

Thanks.

BTW - That was an awesome crash. And that Lotus wasn't an example of the need for 107% rule, but there are a bunch who are.

I had to look, I'm only about 6 years deep into F1.

Wikipedia yo!

Main article: 107% rule

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/107%25_rule

In Formula One, the 107% rule was a Sporting Regulation that affected qualifying sessions from the beginning of the 1996 season until the end of the 2002 season. It stipulated that a driver who did not lap within 107% of the pole position time during the hour-long session the day before the race would not be eligible to compete in the race, subject to the discretion of the stewards.
The 107% rule will be reintroduced for the 2011 season.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_One_racing

107% rule

As the number of cars entered in the world championship fell below 26, a situation arose in which any car entered would automatically qualify for the race, no matter how slowly it had been driven. The 107% rule was introduced in 1996 to prevent completely uncompetitive cars being entered in the championship. If a car's qualifying time was not within 107% of the pole sitter's time, that car would not qualify for the race, unless at the discretion of the race stewards for a situation such as a rain affected qualifying session. There are now 12 teams in F1 so the 107% rule has been removed since the FIA's rules indicate that 24 cars can take the start of an F1 race, and a minimum of 20 cars must enter a race. For 2003 the qualifying procedure changed to a single-lap system, rendering the rule inoperable.

No WikiThingia is a reliable source. But I will grant you that my recollection of it going into place in 88 or 89 or so, was purely from memory and that's not a quotable source in all cases either....and I do love my speculation...."thumbsup"

There was a lot more money in F1 back in '96. Half the teams out there now are trying out new chassis/aero packages, and they're babying the engines because they can't afford to break anything.

The 107% rule is fine if you don't mind a 4-car field.

Secret of Red Bull's qualifying speed revealed?

A secret of Red Bull's superior pace in the decisive Q3 phase of qualifying may have been revealed.

Autosprint's auto.it website reports that the team has a special electronic setting for the Renault engine that maintains a constant exhaust gas pressure.

When the setting is selected, the stream of gases flow constantly from the exhaust through the double diffuser, even when the driver of the RB6 is not pressing the throttle.

This would increase downforce at slow speeds.

The setting, revealed initially on the blog of the British journalist James Allen, is reportedly used sparingly - for example only in Q3 - because it is damaging to the engine
.

The RB6 has been on pole position at 8 of the 9 grands prix so far this season.
