Default Father Son project... UPDATE!!!

Here is a few pics of my Dads Jeep I started rebuilding for him recently.
Specs. 1966 Jeep J2000 1/2 ton truck
327 AMC Rambler V8 (stock for now)
14B FF rear with Detroit and 4:56 gears Shaved with disc brakes ans beefed rear cover
Dana 44 open for now w/ matching gears
T-98 trans
Model 20 t-case
37" Goodyear MTR's

Some mods that are in the works...
Relocate front leaf springs inward to clear better steering front axle and shackle reversal. New shock mounts, new fuel tank and mounts, gut interior and start over! New wiring harness for entire truck, and I am trying to talk him into ditching the bed for some type of flat bet, we'll see! Now the pics.

God, I wish someone would make a hardbody J truck with a grille like that. I would buy 7 of 'em. Second coolest looking truck ever made, right after the old platform fendered power wagons.

You should do up the fenderwells like a M-715. That would be awesome.

I have a '68 M715 and a '70 J-3000, the J2000 is actually a 3/4 ton and the 3000 is a 1 ton. I have a 350 Buick if you want it, it's freshly overhauled, runs on leaded, but has been sitting for about 10 years.
Great trucks will go almost anywhere-need any parts I may be able to help out.

Edit- I believe the tranny is a T-98 if my memory serves me right.

That is something that me and my dad want to do as well. If we had a place to work on it, it would be a full resto with the Gladiator grill and a new FI 5.7L Hemi.

My Dad wants to update the power plant someday but right now we just want to get it running. I will be pulling the front clip maybe this week so I can start fabrication on the front spring hangers. Patrick if the J2000 is a 3/4 ton why did it have such weenie axles? The rear was a 44 but it was a two piece like a model 20 amc axle... He broke it twice just hauling stuff for work, that's why it sat for so long he got tired of searching for axles that would bolt in... I guess he didn't think you could move the spring pads.

By the way Patrick... How many cars and trucks do you actually have??

Great to have a project with your Dad, and it's a really great truck for the project as well.

After Patrick's post I started searching for more accurate info, all I can say is the info for old Jeeps is sketchy at best! Anyone know a GOOD source of info for these old Jeeps?

I have no idea why they did that with the axles, my J-3000 has a 44f and a 53r, I bought the last set of spider gears from Toledo awhile back, no more. So a couple of months weny by and I stripped those gears so I welded them. It is similar to a 60 but not quite. 2 piece axles also. But according to my book it's a 1 ton?

As for cars I have:

1990 Taco
2004 Eclipse Spider
1984 Fj60
1990 Fj62
1987 Xtra cab 4x4 Toy
1985 Scirocco
1973-83 CJ-5
1970 J-3000
1968 M715
1983 Dead Turdcell

I think thats it

I have been looking at Fj Cruisers and 4 door Taco's, I want one bad-either that or a 40th anniversary Landcruiser.

It is way too easy to get sidetracked from this when it is so freaking cold in my garage... I told my Dad "If you want this thing done buy me a heater for my shop!" Doing a lot of web searching right now, looking for pre-fab spring hangers that will work with some modification. I read the online articles from JP magazine on the Hot Dog build, so I may call up M.O.R.E. and see what they say about their S.R.S. brackets and stuff. Also gotta strip the 14B down so I can move the heavy bastard and go through it (getting discs for it also). I am trying to get him to ditch the AMC 327 for a more common motor, we'll see.

You are a loony toon Patrick, and I can't change the channel because your just to damn funny. That will be lucky number 11 for whomever is counting.

Robb, the truck looks like it could be a real winner, I like those body styles no doubt about it. Good luck to you and your Dad with the build.

Talk about a classic truck I love those and kick myself in the @$$ everytime I see one. I had a chance to buy one from the original owner's son a number of years ago...I ended up with a 79 Ford F250 that I built into a nice rig, nothing real trail worthy, but it would tow just about anything this side of 30'...and the gas station to feed that built 460

I am pretty sure Patrick NEEDS 11 cars, (have you seen the turdcell?) He goes out each morning starts at the end of the lineup of cars and gives each one a few cranks till he finds one that starts... Then he takes that one to work!

Actually, the Turdcell, the FJ62, and the J-3000 are the only ones that are undriveable. Everything else runs like a top!!

Got some more work done Saturday....

Pulled the timing cover to bead blast and clean it, pulled the intake manifold off to do the same. What I found was..... VERY VERY clean inside the motor! His other Jeep I put a motor in looked like someone rhino-lined the inside of the engine!! Now he ( my Dad) remembers something about it being rebuilt before he bought it (over 10 years ago).
So I am just going to clean up the outside and repaint it. Got the radiator back from the shop, they fixed it for less than a C-note! Got the caliper brackets for the 14B FF, gonna tear the seat out so I can put in new floor pans and rewire the truck (probably just going to have the seat redone for now till we can find a 60/40 bench that will fit in there. Gotta decide on shackle reversal or not so I can get crackin' on the fab work in the front. I think the rear axle will be almost bolt in, the guy he got the 14B from already moved the perches out on the tubes so I will just do a little clean-up and hack off the stuff we don't need... Oh and reseal the pinion, damn thing leaked some nasty bright red gear oil all over my floor!!

That's all for now, more pics coming soon......
