Yup, technically we can't brew our own, but can buy it for a fuel or drink so long as it's taxed

Thats stupid. The farmers in Ireland used to make potchin.
Basically a strong spirit made from potatoes, with the alcohol
rating of rocket fuel. They told the government it was for the
cows knees as they had knee problems.

I think we both know how much went to the cows.

We're allowed to still what we want here,i think it goes along
the lines of "personal use".If you sell it (same as home brew)
its not legal.

Just seems strange how you can get firearms from kmart
but cant still spirits for yourself.

It started out as people not being able to and/or wanting to pay taxes on the liquor they made for sale and/or trade. As time progressed it was banned in this country after pushing by anti-alcohol groups who didn't want anybody to drink the stuff. There is some thought that the ban had more to do with one of the Rockefeller's (can't remember which one) pushed it through so companies like their Standard Oil had less competition for motor vehicle fuels.

That's not quite true.
While you can have a still, 5litres or less, you cannot make alcohol with it.
This from the ATO web site.

Quote:
What if you want to distil alcohol at home?

If you have a still at home, you must hold an excise manufacturer

licence before you can distil alcohol. Excise licences are only
granted to applicants who can demonstrate they meet the
requirements set out in the Excise Act 1901. These include the
need for physically secure premises (to prevent any other person
having access to the licensed area), skills and experience in
distillation, having professionally calibrated volume and alcoholic
strength measuring equipment and an approved record keeping
system.
You must pay excise duty on any alcohol you produce. The current

rate is in excess of $71 per litre of alcohol. For example, on a 700ml
bottle of vodka at an alcoholic strength of 40% the excise duty
would be approximately $20 per bottle.

You can buy a 1.75 litre bottle of vodka in Arizona for about $8 bucks, so the $20 on a 750ml bottle is just plain stupid, ever watch moonshiners, talk about a bunch of billhillies,

Aquavit / Aqua vitae "Water of life"

Akvavit, like vodka, is distilled from either grain (Sweden, Denmark and Germany) or potatoes (Norway, Denmark, Sweden).[4] After distillation, it is flavoured with herbs, spices, or fruit oil.

The earliest known reference to "aquavit" is found in a 1531 letter from the Danish Lord of Bergenshus castle, Eske Bille to Olav Engelbrektsson, the last Roman Catholic Archbishop of Norway. The letter, dated April 13, accompanying a package, offers the archbishop "some water which is called Aqua Vite and is a help for all sort of illness which a man can have both internally and externally

Good stuff, grow hair on your chest, good for fight warmup.
Nickname in my circles : Boxing Water.
