Default Work shops/garages

I am redoing my garage and would like to see some setups for ideas.

How do you organize your tools, and spare parts?
How do you store your cars?
Anything will help

I just got done epoxing the floor

Suggestion...check the Scale Rigs General Tech section, the Scale Garage thread may give you some tips. Nice floor BTW!

Very nice floor. How long did it take you to paint? How long did it take for the fumes to die down after you finished?

I primed the floor and the cement curb first, you have to wait at least an hour for the to settle but not more than four. I messed up and didn't read the paint epoxy instructions, you have to combine them and then wait an hour. Once that was done I put two coats doing two squares at a time, then put on the flakes. All in all with the error it took 3 hours. The fumes weren't bad at all. It is well worth it, I love the final outcome.

Do you have a link to the stuff you used on the floor?
Some sort of epoxy kit?

Looks good

Shop Valspar Gray Semi-Gloss Latex Garage Floor Epoxy (Actual Net Contents: 128-fl oz) at Lowes.com

It took two kits to do that section.
I added a primer before putting this down. Thanks!!!!

I'm not really looking for scale ideas, more what you guys are using in your full size workshops/Garages.

how slippery is it when wet?

one of the biggest upgrades i did was simple and cheap. lighting. makes working on things so much better.
i removed the difuser off the garage door opener and put in brighter bulbs. i have a seperate garage light, installed brighter bulb. and then put a 4' floresent over the main work bench, and a track light over the bandsaw/belt sander/vice bench.

Not sure yet. I just did it and it was still drying last night. I'm hoping not crazy. I'll test it out

I'll post up a few pictures of my new shop tonight. I've learned a few things over the years.

I too believe that good lighting is very important. I use my garage (heated) for wood working as well as model building. I put in 2 rows of 4 double tube fluorescent light fixtures. That is 8 double tube 4 feet long fixtures in total.

I do have lots of light with no shadows.

I'm in the middle of a massive cleanup/rearrangement in mine.

As far as tips go, lighting and bench space. Also storage, be it shelves or cabinets or whatever.

I still think it would be nice to have a sticky thread or sub forum for this instead of starting a couple new threads a year for it. This is one of the bigger threads on the garage/work area subject.

Build a work bench twice the size you think you need, do the same with the lights. Add a good stereo and your set.

Default Work shops/garages

So I'm building a new ten foot butcher block style work bench. I'll have 4 overhead cabinets. This is 4 feet bigger than my current bench. Then I'll have my tool box to my right on another wall and all the cabinets will have lights under them. I have a 4 ft 2 light system now. The vice is being mounted on a pedal stool, along with the grinder, and drill press. Thanks for the link I'll check it out.

How does everyone store there cars, of you use a standard tool box for your Rc tools?

Self above the bench. I've got room for another shelf above the one in the picture is mine and jrs rc. The wife and daughters rcs will probably take up the one I'm putting up this weekend.

So, my new shop includes a dedicated 10x11' RC fab room. Here is a picture of it from the doorway. 3- 4' T8 lights. I have a work bench that's fairly high so I can work at it while standing. The drawers to the right are full extension, and 22" wide. There are 5 total. Everything is in divided trays and within easy reach. It's a mess right now, but I have at least 5 projects going on at the moment.

I have a lot of overhead shelves and drawers that aren't even being used right now.

This is one of the handiest things I have. It spins around on a bearing and I have access to all my drivers and other tools.

I have a Kennedy machinists tool box that I store more parts and tools in, plus lots of shelves to stash stuff.

More shelves, and my charging station.

My best advise is:

•Large workbench that's high enough to work at while standing.
•Lots of drawers within easy reach.
•Benchtop tools (band saw, grinder) within easy reach.
•Power strip with 4-6 plugs within easy reach.
•Lots of shelves above and around the workspace so you can quickly stash projects
•Lots of lighting
•Safe charging area with organized storage for batteries.
•Way to heat or cool the workspace

Thanks for the pics they will help give me some ideas. So here are the cabinets I have now.

I'm thinking of getting this to place in one for parts storage

This under the one to the far right

And then there will be a work bench similar to this under the entire length or the cabinets

Considering hanging magnetic strips under the cabinets but above the bench to hold my tools. I also like that spinning thing where did you get that from?

I just started with a corner of the basement, pulled the freezer out and painted the floor with porch paint.

On the right you can see one of the two plastic shelving units where I keep my trucks. Those went back in the corner behind the freezer.
Added in 5 outlets all on their own circuits, and the three switches (again on their own circuits), controlling three outlets. One outlet being for the florescent fixtures above, and two more the were going to be used for light and fan if I ever decided to build a paint booth. (Never did.)

This is how it looked back in Jan. 2012,

Those pegboard walls are crammed dang near full now. Oddly, that body hanging on the wall..... the one I started painting black and stopped...... hanging in exactly the same place, still looks the same. Can't help it, there's better stuff to do in the summer, and can't paint in an unheated garage in the winter. {shrug}

I looked into commandeering another corner of the basement for a paint booth, but still ran into too many obstacles. So I built some tables,

Underneath is room for Christmas decorations and other 'junk', and on top of these tables is eventually going to be some plywood bucks and chickenwire/window screen covered in either concrete or plaster. And they are on casters, so if I play my cards right, I can re-arrange them if I ever get bored of a particular course. (provided I put some thought into how the sections will match up.)

(It) Pales in comparison to what you guys have got, but it's still a place I like to hang out.

Putting this light in under the cabinets I posted. I wanted something nicer but they all went out wider then the cabinet.
