Default Making gifts?

Anyone else make stuff for Christmas gifts?

I made chainmail stuff for the girls in my family this year. Here are a couple of my favs I made this year with anodized aluminum rings..

7 inch Full Persian weave, purple and gray 16ga 1/4" rings

19 inch European 4-in-1 Round, with 1" Byzantine weave at the magnetic clasp. Red and silver 18ga 5/32" rings.

7 inch Japanese 12-in-2 in daisy pattern, Orange 16ga 1/4" with pink 18ga 5/32" rings

I dont. Plan on keeping this a hobby. I do it to clear my mind of the day job. Just made these as gifts for Christmas. Hope they like them, the red/silver necklace took me over 6 hours, frigging tight weave and small rings.

Although etsy is full of little shops of people who do sell them. Prices will vary depending on the complexity of the weave and what the rings are. I used anodized aluminum to keep it light, and my cost down (made 7 braclets and 2 necklaces). I've used sterling silver and copper before.

Thanks!

Oddly enough making a costume for a friend in high school. It was a European 4 in 1 flat weave for a medievil helmet skirt (hangs off back to protect neck) down the rabbit hole I went. It was the 90's so pre-youtube, learned from books. YouTube makes it easy now. I routinely go through the galleries on a few sites that I buy rings on to see patterns that people are makeing/altering.

Co-worker seen me working on some of these over my lunch, she wants a scale bra for a Red Sonja costume. Half tempted to make it lol.

I draw, but I've never done wood burning.

That train is nicely done, about how long does something like that take?

Beautiful examples of gifts! I started out to make some railroad spike coat hangers. I simply fell behind schedule so they won't make it in time for Christmas, but they will eventually get there.

My son made a kingsmail shirt out of SS... 8in2 weave
Spent a ridiculous amount of hours bending and weaving
his own loops from SS wire.

Kinda heavy... but no arrow can penetrate it.

He could have made 500 bracelets in the time spent working on it...
and I tried to motivate him into doing just that
in an honest attempt at trying to make a profit.

But he wasn't interested in making jewlery for sale.
and just did it for his own personal interest/hobby.

I'd think stuff like this would sell on ebay or the like.
But he didn't think it would be profitable considering his time consumed.

I really don't understand young people these days...
They'll work really hard for their own hobbies or interests...
But not when it comes to a venture of trying to make a dollar !?

Your chainmail gifts look really nice
and I'd think anyone would be pleased
with receiving your custom made jewelry as a gift.

Alot of work involved I know...
but with the millions of people living in this world...
and the easy internet access to reach out to everyone
throughout this whole world.

I'd have thought the worlds folk would realize/appreciate the value
and would've wanted to make a purchase.
But my son didn't agree and so... he never made an attempt.

Now his kingsmail shirt just lays around collecting dust
and he's grown out of it

nice work... looks great

That wood burning art is really nice too.

On that one it took about 25 hours, but I have spent well over 40 on some more detailed burnings.

I think I remember you describing that project when Marcia and I were on our cross country trip. I'm sure they will be great when they're done.

If on your phone look at Pixlr, on PC make sure the aspect ratio is locked so the ratio doesn't skew.

The leather work is nice, your brother should be very happy with it. Its been a while since I've done it, made wallets and belts. One of these days I'll pony up the $$ for a kangaroo hide for a whip.

Never done functional riveted chain mail. Mine has all been decorative split ring. The time to rivet a shirt don't even want to think about it.

I kinda see his point of keeping the hobby a hobby. I've changed 2 hobbies into day jobs, now hate those hobbies. But if I was half ass quick at riveted mail, selling a shirt would be stupid $$ , wouldn't think there would be much call for it outside ren fairs and jousting, joust guys are nuts lol.

I'm mean right?! It's gotta be fitted for her, so why the hell not? Unless you'd rather pass on the job for your eyesight sake. That which has been seen can not be unseen.

I had the time to fill a mason jar with rings I cut out of some wire, that I rolled on a screwdriver by hand. did a 4in 1 patch.. took me 4 days. and it was only a 8x8inch square..

I still have more wire I could make rings out of, but f that. ill buy rings next time. scalemail is cool too.

...No it wasn't riveted plates

It was made using thousands of split rings woven.
But he used much harder SS woven in 8 - 2 weave
Leaves no openings and is rather thick/heavy IMO

It could only be penetrated by shooting at it with .22LR at close range.
Definitely not bullet proof.

But spears and arrows... cannot penetrate it.

I think he made it... just to see if he could.

He liked participating in the Ren Fairs...
But he no longer participates in that interest as much these days.

A couple years ago I made several sets of tuned wind chimes out of copper and/or steel pipe. This year I decided at the last possible second to make keychains for friends/relatives. Some got to where they were going in time, some haven't shipped out yet.

This.

Anything I do from now on will be whenever I feel like it and in small quantities.

Awesome work! Very cool, shiny stuff.

I made some 3D printed gifts. Some were my models. Some were models from the STL repositories that I painted. I don't have any pictures right now.

Uh yes! As long as you are there for the modeling session. I'm sure you'll have to test fit it and make adjustments to fit her curves!

Finally got them done tonight, now to get them boxed up and shipped out. I'm hoping that the people getting these will still appreciate them even though I failed at making the delivery date.
