I have a 90 olds 88 royal, oddly enough that I got from my great grandma. The thing is a tank, I use is as my daily drive into the city. Its been hit so many times it has a scrap title now. I have let breaks go on it before, but holy hell man, did you not notice the grinding sound bet she stops on a dime now |

I hate working on brakes.....at least yours were disc. I had to work on the drums (all 4 corners) on my 75 CJ5 quite a few times when I was rebuilding it. That sucks when the parts are really tough to find.... |

Nice work I had a customer come in saying, "Well my brakes feel funny and they just started making noise the other day." His rotor looked darn near like that, the hat wasn't separated yet but was down into the cooling fins like that. Made a good conversation piece on the counter though Good stuff

Wow The Saxon Ford stealership in St Paul MN has a rotor wore to the cooling fins like that in their parts department display case.... but the center is still attached. That is some SERIOUS brake failure! Few months back my mother was driving home and heard a loud snap! Rear brakes started catching bad and trying to lock up but she managed to get it home. Took it into the shop, The rear brake adjuster cable had snapped off, and wrapped around on of the brake shoe. Somehow, it snapped the brake shoe in HALF and it totaled EVERYTHING inside the drum including the drum. This was on a well maintained 96 XJ thats never been offroad. |

We had a few cars come into the dealer like that. One was a Mustang that lost the brakes. Customer came in all pissed off saying Ford was selling faulty brakes and how he was going to sue, blah blah blah. I cut the rotor clean off the hat and the caliper piston had come out so far that it was MIA. When asked if he heard anything prior to the pedal hitting the floor, he said "about a month ago it started making noise but it didn't sound bad enough to worry about. Then a week ago it kinda just went away." Another one was a Town Car that was all crunched in the front. Blood on the bumper and hood. The elderly man who owned it was partially deaf, so he couldn't hear the grinding noise. Lost the brakes and ran into some people in a cross walk.:-( Lucky no one died. As a 17+ year mechanic, I always keep my vehicles in the best possible condition. I personally would never let my brakes get to that point in fear of hurting someone more so than myself. |

Yup, I did that to a 79 T-Bird. Shot the piston out of the caliper, lost fluid, lucky for me the restrooms at the city park are made of brick. Ran my stepmoms big brown bird into the public crapper. It was a 79 so it was not damaged, except for the bumper. Good times.
