Default My 1:1 Moab Trip (Extraction)

Well although i couldn't make it to Moab for the nationals. I already had a 1:1 wheeling trip planned into the Canyonlands National Park, Needles district. The Monday after Nat's, i left home for a week full of fun, ranging from fourwheeling, hiking, and mountainbiking. Just wanted to share these adventures with fellow enthusiast's.

Camped in sqaw flatts monday night and ended up here, Elephant Hill, on tuesday morning after we picked up our backcountry permit.

After the first 3-point turn. Pics dont do it justice.

Looking down that same stretch.

One from up top

A fun place to go through

The only issue on the way in. Spare tire bounced out of its holder

Great scenery on this trail throughout!

Left a little paint on this rock, and my first bit of trail damage on my truck.

This was a little nerve racking for a full sized!

In case you couldn't tell there's only an inch and a half between my mirror and the rock wall

Got through it ok, and made it to the coolest campsite i've ever been to. Devil's kitchen campsite 4. I've been here before so i already knew about it.

Under the huge rock overhang to the truck.

Out from the truck, down our little campsite lane. With "Castle Rock" in the back, as we named it.

Some of the stuff right above our camp.

Took a drive down to see the confluense of the Green River and Colorado river.

This was supposed to be a video.

Looked like the trail was paved down this hill with all the smooth slickrock.

A little taste of the fun washes we were driving in.

A fun 3-Point turn

Had to back down the next stretch. My trucks too long to make this turn like your Jeeps and Toyota's.

After the hill

Hiking in Chesler Park.

Some interesting erosions from the wind and sand in the walls

It was nice and cool in the shade.

Had to turn sideways to get through this one.

Some more scenery out to Druid Arch.

Druid Arch

Some Pictographs off the side of the road.

Now come's the fun part. My buddy and I were headed back to camp after hiking all day when my truck cut out and rolled to a stop. Luckily we had just gotten past the Silver Stairs under our own power. But we tried everything to get it running. My inertia switch wasn't tripped, and i was getting spark when i cranked it. When i turned the key on neither of my fuel pumps kicked on. Well we looked and the fuel pump relay, took some spare wire from my tool box and jumped it. They both worked now, but my injectors still weren't firing. So we slept in the truck that night, hiked back to camp in the morning to get some breakfast and get help. There were some neighboring campers that were more than happy to tell the rangers we were stranded on the way out. So on friday morning we hopped on our bikes and rode out to the ranger station 7 miles away. We got a hold of family and they were on there way with a trailer to rescue us. Since we couldn't tow it over Elephant Hill ourselves, we had to give good ol Nations Towing out of Moab a call. They specialize in this kind of extraction, and are the only one's that do it. Here's the pics of him winching me a 1/4 mile to the trail head.

Here's where it started getting tricky. Ever pulled off a 3-Point turn towing a vehical? Neither have we. This guy was a great operator, and didn't damage my truck at all during this ordeal.

He backed up the hill, pulling me forwards for the last time.

He had to use two winches to both lift, and drag the rear end sideways to head up the next hill backwards

We started at the first little left bend in this road, all the way over the hill.

3-Point turn number two.

What we came up.

Another little hairy spot to get drug backwards through.

And we finally made it up the backside! We started about 8, and it took us about 3 hours to get to this point.

Finally, back to the trail head. You can see my dad's Powerstroke in the front. Believe it or not, he's taken it over this trail several times!
With no damage other than a ripped of mud flap.

Down to the frontside 3-Point turn.

Finally back to safety. We backed the trailer to here, and coasted onto it.

Here's Newspaper Rock, on the way out.

Well there was my week of "fun" down the drain ha ha. It turned into a $1050 Towing bill for a 1/4 mile. And a long 7 1/2 hour drive back home.

Thanks for checking it out! Let me know what you thought!

Ha ha, yeah like my dad said. I'll never forget this trip, thats for sure. But yeah it was an expensive trip, and those guys made bank, thats for sure. But a Toyota would have made this trail way easier. But it's a full sized and i have street tires that i didn't air down, so you gotta give it props if you've ever been on it.

I replaced relay's, and the module on the side of the distributor with no avail. So i took it to the dealer to get it diagnosed. They traced it to somewhere in the wiring harness that fried. So i gave them the go ahead to fix it. Ended up taking another $350, and i got it back this past Wed. Purrin like a kittin again tho.

It's a suprisingly capable rig for being a bone stock full-sized, but like 1BJB said, it could happen to anybody's rig. It was still a once in a lifetime trip.
