Question Brand New LiPo Puffed Up Whilst In Storage

I've heard that if the pack was out of balance before use (one or two cells puff rather than the whole pack)...but I never suspected that this can happen even without charging the pack at all.
In my case its a 3cell 1500mah 20c Chinese one (bought six of these that are doing well).

1. Has anyone had a simmilar experience where their LiPo puffed up even before they ever charged it?

2. Can I still use this battery?

Thanks!!!

Never charge or use a puffed lipo. It's dangerous.

I had this happen with a Thunder Power pack.

Thunder Power replaced the pack quickly.

The pack was stored with all my other packs, except the pack that swelled up was still in the retail bag (never charged, no connector).

Absolutely do not use a Lipo that has been damaged. I have had two Lipo fires, both because of a charger failing. I lost over $1000 worth of stuff just before 2007 Nats. Thanks again to Holmes Hobbies, RC4wd and Horizon Hobbies for providing with a discount on the parts I needed to replace after the fire.

In a cardboard box with a bunch of other batteries of the same model and others ...out of the sun of course ...the only explanation I can think of is that the very sudden drop in temperature in Japan had something to do with it...
read this http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18320where a guy had a simmilar thing happen to two of his packs during the start of winter... the last post #6 makes a lot of sense

Here is that post and some useful info for all LiPo users

" Why puff up ? On another thread about lipos. The person mentioned that water contacting the Lithium produces a gas. Well, SUPPOSE the factory is not carefull about the edge sealing of the cell. Say the active edge of Lithium JUST BARELY is left outside the seam. Now we have a fuse, that leads into the cell where more Lithium is available. Or there is a smodge of Lithium right under the seal. All could cause a puff up.
Lead acid car batteries can and do have momentary internal shorts due to " wiskers of conductive material ". Some do it more than others.

Be greatfull for only a puff up.
