I'm not sure why they specify a battery size limit. You should be able to charge those at .5 amps with no problems.

I charge AAA cells on my Hyperion all the time. I set it to .5 amps and hit the go button. As long as you can select the charge rate,it should work fine I'd think.

you got lucky. I won't even charge a D size cell at 3 amps.

I've seen AA cells vent charging at 1.5 amps.

Heat is a killer for batteries. Depending on how much capacity they had, at 3 amps, you were probably charging them at a rate that was at least double what would be the ideal charge rate. For example, if the batteries were 1500mah, then you charge them at 1.5A to get the most cycles out of the cells.

For Dubs' batteries, a charge rate up to .65A would be safe to get the most cycles out of the batteries.

I use cheapo Ray-o-Vac rechargeables and I've had to do some "emergency" charging before a comp or two and hammered them with around 2.5A and it pretty much was the death knell for 'em. The cheapy Wal-Mart batteries cannot take much punishment.

I'm running 7cell AA Duracell's 2560mah and charge em' at 1A only with a few emergency charges here and there @3A. It gets a little bit warm but I always set the batt right next to the charger fan so that helps out a lot. I've had the cells for over 3yrs now and it's still holding charge capacity. I guess it all comes down to the quality of the cells and the user on determining the battery life expectancy.
