esc smoking...

so I bought a used losi night crawler, battery it came with was fried, so I got a new one, its the right battery, the shop suggested it. anyways I drove it for about 5 minutes out front and then it acted like it was dying, wouldnt steer and had no power, but if I let it sit for a few minutes, its powerfull again. then it did the no power again and I saw smoke coming from under the body, the only thing hot by the time I got the body off was the ESC, im guessing its fried. my question is this, is it a common problem or is something wrong? and should I upgrade or get the same ESC.

What ESC is in it. Im not familiar with the Losi NC. I would believe something is wrong with it or a part of the wiring.

1. What ESC
2. What Servo
3. What battery
4. What Receiver/Radio

This will help in getting a proper answer.

Re: esc smoking...

ok the only marking on the esc says lot no. 0907, there was another sticker but its scratched off by the former owner. looks to be stock tho.
battery is the losi 7.4v 3300mAh2s2p.
the steering servo is a hitec hs-7965mg coreless digital
and the radio is a stock losi spektrum 2.4 GHz DSM 2 channel radio.

What shop? Very few good ones out there, you usually get a shop monkey pushing the items the owner wants sold.

They are not all like this, but a vast majority.

oh and the ESC is compatible with both battery types, and I have it set up to run li-po batteries which is what I have.

Re: esc smoking...

Ok, I would start by disconnecting all electronics and set them out on a table. Easier to work on this way and much safer.

When everything is disconnected check and see if there is anything binding in the rig. Check axles, wheels, knuckles, driveline, motor anything in the drive train. If everything seems to spin or move freely then move on to the electronics.

Hook up your electronics the same way you would installed on the truck.
ESC to reciever Throttle port. Servo to Steering port. ESC to the motor.
Then hook up the battery and see if it works properly, try to perform normal function and see if the ESC gets warm, it should not really get warm this way since there wont really be a load on the ESC or Servo. If everything functions properly, just re-install the motor and see if it will move the rig properly.

Good luck and I hope things work out for you cause it sucks when a rig goes down and there is no definate reason you can figure out.

That is probably the most asked question on this site. Poke around a bit, you'll find the answer. "thumbsup"

ok I think I understand, now the question still remains, what are some good ESC options for my night crawler?

My son has a Night Crawler and I have been reading a lot of posts on here. The stock motor claims to be a 55turn but some guys on here say it is actually a 35turn? From reading different posts in the Losi forums it seems brushed motors burn up pretty quick if you don't take apart axles and do a good greasing. Again this is stuff I have read on here. Search for Losi Comp Crawler. That is basically the same truck but transmission/ drivetrain plus some better parts(that will fit LNC) from what I read?

Or go right to the LCC section.

I did some of the things on this page. Grease in the axles and a 21turn motor made a whole new truck!
Some info
This shows a picture where they drill holes in the axles which make it easier to grease.
