I'd guess;

pinion gear on the motor too big

gear mesh too tight

If you were running it and it got hot..... Then its like above your gear mesh is Prolly too tight.

I would vote gearing if you had it on the ground running it. The stock gearing is 80/20 and needs to be more like 87/15. If you were running it in the air and it got hot, it sounds like a bad connection or two or it is possible it is the motor.

+1.

How much running has it had since new?

If not much running, it may be overgeared (as craddock stated) or the gear mesh is too tight (as JW stated).

Hot motors are:
-Overgeared
-Tight gear mesh
-Drivetrain binding

Read what you were already told. Not trying to be a pain but you went from 80/20 to 85/22 You really didn't change the gearing just changed how you got to almost the same gearing. You should be running 87/15 or 87/14, 87/13 in that area or you could do 90/20 but I am not sure the 90 will fit inside the spur cover. I run 87/15 in all of mine and have never had over heating issues even after 3+ hrs of running. Also if you can post a pic so we can see the the wiring and connections to your motor.

For the life of me, I don't know how you people crawl with such astronomically tall gearing. Both my Scorps came with 14/87, and both have been bumped up to 35 turn motors. Recently I tried out one of the 20 tooth pinions from the spare parts bags and the thing felt completely lame. Probably fine for flat trails running, but crawling was horrible.
And then to top it all off, you're running tall gearing AND a motor light on turns?

And what would you be hoping to accomplish with that?

Now that I think about it, might not be a bad idea to open up your transmission and have a look. I recently got one in trade where the screws for the outdrives had come out and were scraping up the inside of the case. Suppose that could be going on.

You're still way overgeared, though.
