| Trinity 15x2 Speedgem motor.. Too hot???
Alright, It's not for my crawler, but a decent electrical question nevertheless... yes, i searched, but nothing helped me out... Setup: Traxxas Stampede 16/86 gearing locked diff Trinity 15x2 Speedgem Stock everything else ESC temp holds at around 125* Motor temp after 1 3500Mah pack was around 220* Seems mighty hot to me. Just installed the aluminum idler gear and new spur gear after stripping out the old ones. Made sure I greased the internal gears well, no bimding in the drivetrain. Any ideas??? |

That would severely limit the top speed tho..... This isn't a crawler, and at 16/87 I'm already 3 teeth less on the pinion than stock |

General rule of thumb on gearing any modified motor is the turn of the motor minus 2 teeth... thats a 13... Im with HndsWthtShdws... A good hand wound 15 turn motor is much stronger than the cheapo speed gems... try a good hand wound 19 turn... like an Epic Outlaw 19 they have TUNS of torque and you can go with an 18 tooth pinion on a pede... So why would they put a 12t 550 in stock with a 19t pinion? I'm confused....

550's are slower and torqier (sp.) than 540's.

Just as a comparison, I changed the pinion out back to the 19t today and after running 2 3300Mah packs through it only got a motor temp of 230*, and ESC temp of 125*, not that big of a change, and I ran it harder this time. Could I have it undergeared? Do they make heatsinks for these things? There is only one spot on the motor that is getting this hot too, btw. There is a hole (of sorts) in the mid of the can, and that's where I'm getting that temp. Everywhere else seems to be at around 195*. I would really like some input here, as I don't want to burn anything up!

If this motor is really that bad, what kind of motor should I be looking for? ESC is an XL-5 with 12t 550 and 15t 540 motor limits...

How about you spend 2 bucks trying the right pinion before spending 40 bucks on a new motor. Theres nothing wrong with the motor, you just have it drastically overgeared.

but going from 4.5:1 down to 6.6:1 is going to seriously hinder my top speed!

Think of it this way. With it overgeared, the motor has to really work hard to get and keep the truck moving. That's why its getting hot. But if you'd gear it better, the motor doesn't have to work as hard and can be, technically, more efficient. A trick I learned long ago, a smaller pinion can be faster... But if you're still bent on going faster, then you're gonna need to drop some cash on a good speed control and good motor, think brushless... | |

I'm not saying anyone is wrong, trust me. I'm just trying to find the best way to keep the top end somewhere around 20, and not overheat the motor.... Brushless is the way I want to go, but the budget is not allowing that right now...

I agree, 13t pinion. You will probably get FASTER speeds with the lower pinion. You are just cooking and slowly ruining your motor right now. A lower pinion will let it rev up fully without causing stupid high amp draws. didnt I recommend the same thing to you in a PM last week? |

Trying to keep top speed at 20?! You know stock speed is like 30 (on 7 cells) right?

the PM said 16/87 i thought, that's why I got the 16... Top speed is 30, with a 7 cell (not 6) and 23t pinion..... Now I just gotta get the 13... :-D

Time for a LHS run anyhow... Turns out last test run I busted part of the axle. Maybe this means time for the MIP CVD kit?!?! While I'm there I'll pick up pinion gears 11-14 to give me some testing room.

After talking to the guy at my LHS, he said that the XL-5 pede rims/tires are horribly out of ballance. I was in the market for new rims/tires anyhow, so i picked up a set of pede front rims and some 2.2 Moabs. put them on the front (no resistance with RPM's) and noticed how bad t hese were too. ballanced the tires with pieces of stick on weights (i have plenty I use for Motorcycle tires) and went out for a run. Nothing too drastic on the first pack, waited and checked temp after a 3300 CBP Basher pack, and was suprised to find the hottest temp I could find was 160*. waited for the motor to cool and put in a 3500 pack to do some real testing, and after a pack of hard bashing, jumping, speed runs and the works (with a 16t pinion) the motor's hottest point was 180*. way better, but am I still running too hot?

BTW, I do have the 13t pinion, butthe top speed is horrible (has to be only around 10MPH), and I can barely keep the front end down...
