Default HH Crawlmaster/BRXL Slow Speed

I just wired up my brand new crawlmaster and Brxl. It's geared at 56/13. Went to test it out for the first time and it ran fine until it went to crawl up a small rock. It would just quit then roll back down the hill. It runs fine at fast speeds but slow speed crawling is a no go for some reason. Anybody have any ideas? Maybe I have something calibrated wrong? Thanks!

Just a side note too, but it's the stock remote too.

Gearing is a little tall.. 56/11 is a 5.09:1 gear ratio..
But that shouldn't brown out ur esc..
What battery are you using?

Check motor timing. Re-cal the esc. Check batt voltage. What are your motor and esc temps?

5000 NimH battery. I'll try to recalibrate the Brxl when I get to our condo. On the way to Florida right now! Do HH motors come broke in or do I have to break it in?

Yep.. I thought maybe so.. Sounded like NiMH..

Probably might want to get some lipo's.
Anther guy on here, was having similar troubles. He went to lipo and they all went away.

Are you running a bec?

No bec yet. Forgive my lack of knowledge, still a new guy. What exactly does a bec do?

All good..
Bec, battery eliminator circuit. (Or something close to that) ;)

It separates the servo power from the esc power.

That way, the servo isn't taking power away from your esc/motor.

It will stop issues like the one you having.

Sounds like a necessity. I found a hobby shop where we are vacationing. I'll see if I can find a bigger spur gear and maybe a bec and a lipo or two. I'll probably let them check it out too. Thanks and I'll check back in when it's all fixed!

Also buy the castle creations castle link for programming. You will need it for programming your BEC and ESC.

Smaller pinion's..

I haven't found a a need for a bigger spur.. It gets into stuff: tranny cover, drive shaft, and output.

Just got the esc calibrated again. It seems to be running fine now. But I would agree the gearing is a little steep. I'll have to get to the hobby shop down here and get some gears.

What's a good ratio to run for mostly trail running/ crawling? I can seem to get a clear answer. Guys are saying they've smoked their motors on what looks like many different ratios. Just want a clear idea of a good ratio.

You will be fine with a 5.60:1 ratio....if you are running a 56t spur..just get a 10t pinion...i run anywhere from a 9t to a 11t pinion with no issues at all....

I run from 10t to 12t.. Lol.. Now mine are 13t crawlmasters on 3s.

What turn crawlmaster do you have?

I use to run a 16t crawlmaster pro on 4s in my 8.5lb scaler.. Gearing was 87/16..(which is 5.4:1 gear ratio) Never had a issue.

What servo are you running? A servo that is going out can cause all kinds of problems. If it keeps giving you problems try un plugging the servo and slow crawling. If the problem goes away it's your a servo problem.

So it sounds after reading your thread that your solution was a BEC and a lipo. I'm like you, I love my NimH batteries. But everyone swears by their Lipo's. Thanks for the help and the good laugh in your thread!
