Default 4ws Radio

Hey guys I a just acquired my first Clod based rig therefore I just found the need for 4ws. I have seen several of you guys using the modded TQ3 but I was wondering if this is the best option for the money. I will more than likely be getting one from The Crawler Store if I don't find one here. This rig will be used in the comps so I want a good radio that will perform they way it should. I am not rich by no means but I am not affraid to spend some money to get what I need for everything to be right. I guess what I am asking is what would you guys reccommend? Once again if the TQ3 is the way to go that is fine but I just want to be sure. Thanks for the help in advance.

I like my Futaba Skysport FM systems which have been modded for ground frequency. Twin sticks so 4 channels.
I have forward/reverese and rear steer on the left stick and front steer on the right stick.

Nice, how do you mod them for ground use?

Have you looked at the UTQ3 from RCP Crawlers? A little higher than a regular ol TQ3 modded for indy rear steer but it gives a couple different options as well. If I was gonna buy a new radio right now and wanted to go on the cheap,I'd probly end up with the UTQ3 from RCP Crawlers

Yeah it really depends how much you can afford or how much you care about dealing with frequency conflicts. If you're going to be competing I would really consider getting at the very least an FM based system. The M11 is of course a high-end radio but it's money well spent and has a 3rd channel knob that's useful for rear steer.

Thanks for the RCP recommendations Raptor!

^^ I agree with pigeonfarmboy

One problem i see with the TQ3s is ther are only 6 channels on 27Mhz AM, and if there are 7 guys with TQ3s.......driving 2 trucks at the same time. The other problem is the lack of EPA, specially if you're going to run digital servos. I really like my DX3

Thanks guys I will be doing some competing here in the SE so I guess I will be looking to something else besides the TQ3. If you guys make a reccomendation I would appreciate the full name of the radio so I can search for it on Tower etc. Thanks again!

Spektrum DX3 from Horizon Hobby. It appears that there is a newer version called DX3.0 it looks slightly different than the DX3.

I have been using nothing but JR XR3s for years and they are the biggest bang for the buck radio I've come across. 3 model memory, 3 channel, EPA, throttle adjustments, etc. You can get them for pretty damn good price (under $60) on ebay with an Rx if you watch.

Either of those are good radios but I thought you were on a budget? You can pick up an Xr3 for half that.

BTW, look at the DX3 and look at an XR3 and tell me what they have in common.

Well I want a nice radio but I don't want to pay for something I don't need. I will be using this radio in the comps so I would like to have something that is comp worthy. Thanks for all the help as I am completely lost when it comes to the electronics side of this hobby.

Get any of the following radios and you'll be set.
-Airtronics M8 or M11
-Airtronics MX-3
-Futaba 3PK
-Spektrum DX3 (Probably the best value. Not having to even think about frequency crystals is a godsend @ comps.)
-Spektrum DX6 (If you don't mind using sticks. I prefer sticks for 4WS)
-JR XR3 or XS3

Maybe (definantly) I'm a bit slow, but whereabouts on the XR3 transmitter is the 2nd steering control?
