Default 4 cell split

Ordered a 4 cell 10000mah 40c lipo from hobbyking global warehouse for my hexacopter and what I ended up with was a 4 cell 6600mah battery with only 20c. So with a new scale build starting next week I decided to split the battery into two 2 cell packs. With the nature of lipos don't attempt this if you don't have Above average soldering skills and a good understanding of lipo cells.

First remove the outer shrink wrap from the pack. I use body scissors for this since the have a round point that are less likely to puncture the cell.

This pack had a second layer to also bind the cells together.

Once again take care Not to puncture a cell.

With this layer removed you get to the heart of the pack. Everything wired in series and balance lead in place.

All lipo companies have different methods of isolating the tabs to keep them from shorting out. Keep these for when you assemble new pack. With a 4 cell pack the process is rather simple. Split it in the center of the pack. Unsolder the center tab connection then I went with removing the ground wire from the last cell of the pack. Once this was done I removed the balance leads. With this done you have 2 cells with power leads and the other without any. I use a permenant marker to make a plus sign on the cell with the positive tab and a minus sign on the negative tab of the other cell.

Next I separated the cell into 2 each.

Next unsolder the negative wire and set the bare pack aside then soldered the negative wire to the first pack. With this done add the balance leads. These can be acquired from amazon. Ten of them run about $4.

Now you have a 2 ell pack with 2 cell with the appropriate balance lead.

Now to add tape to keep the cells from shorting out.

I have a pet peeve of taping the pack with electrical tape before adding the new heat shrink.
