Default Safe to plug FPV camera to receiver for power?

I'm currently looking to set up a casual FPV setup on my rigs but wanted to keep things really simple.

I'm currently looking at a camera/transmitter combo that has Input power requirements of : 3.2–5.5V.

My receivers are set to 6V, but is there really any danger of connecting it straight to the receiver box for power?

Yes....

If the camera/transmitter is not rated to handle 6VDC, one of three things is likely to happen:
1. Best case: It works with no issues
2. The camera/transmitter have an over-volt protection circuit on them and they simply will not power up.
3. Most likely: They will fry at 6VDC.

It I were doing this I would run a BEC powered by a T-connector from the battery (plus in between the battery and ESC). Set the BEC for 5VDC and you are all set.

Get a good camera with a wide power range.
I use a Foxeer Falkor and it works from 5v up to 40v

I thought so. I was wondering why a rather popular YouTube channel was suggesting plugging it into the receiver box and they had mistakenly said that "most of these RC cars output 5V from the receiver", so I knew something wasn't right.

This might be a good option! Opens up battery/power options too! Thanks!

There absolutely is a danger. If the FPV gear says 5.5V max and your Rx is putting out 6V you're almost guaranteed to fry something in the FPV gear.

I'd recommend you get one of the cheap-ass hobbywing BEC's. You can usually find them on Aliexpress or Ebay for about $5 and you could plug it into your Rx to limit the voltage to 5V.

Or just run the FPV gear off a small 1S LiPo.
