Narrow R1's

I am not waiting for Gmade to make a set of narrow scale'ish axles, the plan is to narrow a set of R1 axles to fit under my cherokee:shock: I have one of the housings cut. I used 10mm stainless steel to sleeve the axle tubes. I am going to fab up some sort of bracket to re-join the tubes. here is where I am as of tonight.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n6.jpg

I am also toying with the idea of clocking the pumkins, we will see how hard the brackets are to make.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n8.jpg

Here is the difference in width, I cut out a total of 28mm, 17mm on one side and 11mm from the other side.

Hey mate well done with that axle narrowing...looks great. Have you cut the shafts already? Yours must be the 1st attempt i've seen with the R1 axles. Keep it up and keep us updated "thumbsup"

axlline 11-09-2010 03:44 PM

No I have not cut the shafts yet. that is the next step, when I get time.

I decided not to cut up the stock inner shafts when I came across some 5mm stainless steel rod, I have made two inner short side shafts and cut the spool side key, on to the pics:)

I haven't yet, but the plan is to use a small amount Of JB weld to seal the cut and make an L shaped bracket for strenght.

Szczerba 11-10-2010 06:28 AM

Those look just as good narrowed up. Good work.
I have had great results using 30 sec or 5 min setup 2 part epoxy to hold parts together. The stuff that comes in a syringe at the auto parts store or wally world.

You could also drill and tap the stainless inserts, and then use screws to hold it in conjunction with JB Weld or an epoxy. I would do top and bottom, it looks like you would have enough room to do it. Then you could for sure clock the pumpkin."thumbsup"

I really like these axles, after doing Eric's FJ chassis. I'm going to pick my self up a set. And looks like they're pretty easy to narrow as well.

axlline 11-10-2010 09:18 AM

Thanks, I think I will try the set screw idea, I finished one short side inner, have to get more cut off wheels for the dremel tomorrow:sad: and now for the flash:ror:

axlline 11-11-2010 03:25 AM

Thanks for the welcome comments, today I finished the long side inners, drilled and tapped the axle tubes, and as usual on the last screw hole broke the tap off in the housing, after a lot of unkind word and calming down I carefully drilled out the tap. One down, one to go, and I am out of grease,on to the pics.

How close of tolerance was the sleeves to the ID of the housing? I'm going to pick up a set now for sure."thumbsup" Got an idea now!;-)

That's what I thought it would need, to be almost a press fit. Should get some ordered up this weekend.

93-306 11-11-2010 02:10 PM

Man I just sold a set. I must have another set now I too have an idea!

crcoppens 11-11-2010 09:25 PM

Looks great "thumbsup", another idea for the R1 axles. They are great axles but just too big for most project. I like the way you put this together. 'Mog build, maybe?

Thanks, no it's not a mog build. I have a '99 xj and I have always wanted to put a set of portals under it, but life keeps getting in the way. I plan to make a scale version of my xj.

Great work. Now if you could only get the same sort of steering angle that is achievable with the axial axles.

Yeah I know, let me think on that;-)

Well I got the Axial axles out from under the frame and put the NR1's(as I call them) under there. I added a drain plug to the diff covers and made a carbon upper link plate. Thought I would give you all a few test body shots.

Hows the build coming along?

axlline 11-21-2010 02:43 PM

Got the body painted, need to trim. Trying to better the steering, got a set of M05 AL knuckles and some oter nic nacs. I will post an update when I get home from work.

axlline 11-22-2010 06:11 AM

Ok, been busy with work, but I managed to get the body painted and mostly trimmed. I cut the front windows out to make it look more like the '97 and up XJ's. I have been messing with the steering, I found a set of M05Pro Alu. knuckles(made by eagle racing) that are close to the same size, I had to add a .5mm shim the top of the knuckle to make them fit better. I will tear them a part later and get some better pics. I am also trying a set of TL-01 outer axles, the cups are just a hair longer and the drive pin was coming out of the cup with the stock outer axles and the new knuckles(I think I got a small amount of more steering). Got a winch to put on the purple people:lmao: eater should match the grill good once I remove the protective film, and a closer look at my diamond plate rear quarters, oh yeah I put the g made shocks on there, alot smoother than the other ones, on to the pics. Thanks for the intrest.

Time for an update, got some time this weekend to add some scale touches, mirrors, roof rack cross bars and windshield wipers to the body. Got the wheels stripped, didn't even need to polish them. I also made me some CVD's, yep, I spent about an hour searching my local shop and found some Kyosho shafts that looked close, and picked up a set of yeah racing TT01 CVD's. I used the Kyosho shafts for my inner shaft and the outer from the TT01. I had to grind on the knuckels because they were limiting the steering. I also got rid of the slop in the front wheels, I just put an O-ring on the outer shaft before I slipped it into the knuckle, front wheels don't wobble anymore.

Just saw this thread, awesome job narrowing the axles! Also like the CVD thing, I did mine with some TLT CVD's the same way you did with the Kyosho's.

Now to narrow my axles. "thumbsup"

This one of the best thing someone has ever did with these axles.I use berg offset rims to get mine narrow.

axlline 12-19-2010 03:16 AM

Thanks, I plan on using them for my yota build next month. Took the xj down to the river today and 20 min. into the run the front wheels stopped pulling. Front output= toast:roll:, the axles are doing great.

Very nice work"thumbsup" a friend of mine runs the R1 axles under his scaler I may try to talk him into doing this:mrgreen::mrgreen: Now I know the screws in the tubes are for holding the cut ends together but do the screws "clamp" on to the stainless tube or did you drill and tap the stainless tube for the screws to bolt into?

Thank you, yes, I tapped the stainless tube.
