Narrow R1's I am not waiting for Gmade to make a set of narrow scale'ish axles, the plan is to narrow a set of R1 axles to fit under my cherokee:shock: I have one of the housings cut. I used 10mm stainless steel to sleeve the axle tubes. I am going to fab up some sort of bracket to re-join the tubes. here is where I am as of tonight. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n4.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n5.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n6.jpg I am also toying with the idea of clocking the pumkins, we will see how hard the brackets are to make. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n7.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n8.jpg Here is the difference in width, I cut out a total of 28mm, 17mm on one side and 11mm from the other side. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ow%20R1/n9.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...w%20R1/n11.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...w%20R1/n10.jpg All, well most comments welcome:flipoff: |
Hey mate well done with that axle narrowing...looks great. Have you cut the shafts already? Yours must be the 1st attempt i've seen with the R1 axles. Keep it up and keep us updated "thumbsup" |
No I have not cut the shafts yet. that is the next step, when I get time. |
that is the kind of people that keeps this hobby interesting ,not afraid to take the initiative, i think that is how you spell it ,to make something better .good job and keep it up looks like you got a great idea . |
Thank you. Quote:

"thumbsup""thumbsup""thumbsup" |
looking really good how did you refix the cut axles casings? |

Those look just as good narrowed up. Good work. I have had great results using 30 sec or 5 min setup 2 part epoxy to hold parts together. The stuff that comes in a syringe at the auto parts store or wally world. |

You could also drill and tap the stainless inserts, and then use screws to hold it in conjunction with JB Weld or an epoxy. I would do top and bottom, it looks like you would have enough room to do it. Then you could for sure clock the pumpkin."thumbsup" I really like these axles, after doing Eric's FJ chassis. I'm going to pick my self up a set. And looks like they're pretty easy to narrow as well. |
Thanks, I think I will try the set screw idea, I finished one short side inner, have to get more cut off wheels for the dremel tomorrow:sad: and now for the flash:ror: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...20R1/nr123.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...20R1/nr122.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...20R1/nr121.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...20R1/nr120.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...20R1/nr119.jpg |
^^I think it will work good.^^ Like how these are turning out!"thumbsup" |
hell yeah, that looks awesome, good jod."thumbsup" |
Thanks for the welcome comments, today I finished the long side inners, drilled and tapped the axle tubes, and as usual on the last screw hole broke the tap off in the housing, after a lot of unkind word and calming down I carefully drilled out the tap. One down, one to go, and I am out of grease,on to the pics. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1001.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1002.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1003.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1005.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1007.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1008.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1009.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1010.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1013.jpg |
WOW! Great job! Screws worked good, looks like."thumbsup" Well accept for breaking off a tap. How close of tolerance was the sleeves to the ID of the housing? I'm going to pick up a set now for sure."thumbsup" Got an idea now!;-) |

Man I just sold a set. I must have another set now I too have an idea! |
Looks great "thumbsup", another idea for the R1 axles. They are great axles but just too big for most project. I like the way you put this together. 'Mog build, maybe? |

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...Picture006.jpg Well they are all together, and I know someone will ask, so here are comparsion shots to ax10 axles:flipoff: Thanks for looking. Axl http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1002-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1004.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1001-1.jpg |
Great work. Now if you could only get the same sort of steering angle that is achievable with the axial axles. |
Narrowing job looks great, makes me want another set now! |
Hows the build coming along? |
Got the body painted, need to trim. Trying to better the steering, got a set of M05 AL knuckles and some oter nic nacs. I will post an update when I get home from work. |
Ok, been busy with work, but I managed to get the body painted and mostly trimmed. I cut the front windows out to make it look more like the '97 and up XJ's. I have been messing with the steering, I found a set of M05Pro Alu. knuckles(made by eagle racing) that are close to the same size, I had to add a .5mm shim the top of the knuckle to make them fit better. I will tear them a part later and get some better pics. I am also trying a set of TL-01 outer axles, the cups are just a hair longer and the drive pin was coming out of the cup with the stock outer axles and the new knuckles(I think I got a small amount of more steering). Got a winch to put on the purple people:lmao: eater should match the grill good once I remove the protective film, and a closer look at my diamond plate rear quarters, oh yeah I put the g made shocks on there, alot smoother than the other ones, on to the pics. Thanks for the intrest. Axl http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1034.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1033.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1035.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1037.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1045.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1043.jpg |
Time for an update, got some time this weekend to add some scale touches, mirrors, roof rack cross bars and windshield wipers to the body. Got the wheels stripped, didn't even need to polish them. I also made me some CVD's, yep, I spent about an hour searching my local shop and found some Kyosho shafts that looked close, and picked up a set of yeah racing TT01 CVD's. I used the Kyosho shafts for my inner shaft and the outer from the TT01. I had to grind on the knuckels because they were limiting the steering. I also got rid of the slop in the front wheels, I just put an O-ring on the outer shaft before I slipped it into the knuckle, front wheels don't wobble anymore. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1005-3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1006-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1010-2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1013-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1014.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1015-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1019.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1008-2.jpg And now the CVD's:twisted: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1021.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1020.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1022-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1024-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1025-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1029.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1002-3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1003-3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1004-2.jpg Here is a before and after shot, I am going to get some radius #'s soon. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1035.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1001-3.jpg Thanks for looking. |
Ok, she is a runner, here is the turning radius demo, this is my sons bone stock ax-10 and my narrowed R1 axled cherokee with my DIY CVDs"thumbsup" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E81cSF7rsJQ And here is the first shakedown run, lost a mirror on that tumble, I plan to go back and see if it still there.:lmao: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muU8kteUBMs |
I can not beleve no one has anything to say about the CVD's? |
Just saw this thread, awesome job narrowing the axles! Also like the CVD thing, I did mine with some TLT CVD's the same way you did with the Kyosho's. Now to narrow my axles. "thumbsup" |
Thanks, I forgot to post still shots of my taillights, so here they are along with some more. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1006-2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1010-3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1009-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1008-3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1015-2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1017.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1018.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1014-1.jpg My son and I just got done with some night wheeling, happy to report no breakage. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1027-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1026-2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1030.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1032.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1039.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1040.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1036.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0R1/nr1038.jpg Thanks for looking Axl |
This one of the best thing someone has ever did with these axles.I use berg offset rims to get mine narrow. |
Thanks, I plan on using them for my yota build next month. Took the xj down to the river today and 20 min. into the run the front wheels stopped pulling. Front output= toast:roll:, the axles are doing great. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/nr1002-4.jpg |
Amazing job im sold now on the r1 axles also you said you used 10 mill tubing thats od right and not id and were did you get the turn single lights from |

Yes, it is 10mm OD stainless. The list is in the post with the pics. |
Very nice work"thumbsup" a friend of mine runs the R1 axles under his scaler I may try to talk him into doing this:mrgreen::mrgreen: Now I know the screws in the tubes are for holding the cut ends together but do the screws "clamp" on to the stainless tube or did you drill and tap the stainless tube for the screws to bolt into? |
Thank you, yes, I tapped the stainless tube. |
Cool deal thanks"thumbsup" |
How are those CVD's holding up? |
