Default LR88/109 gmade sawback

Having bought a gmade sawback recently, i decided to make a metal land rover series IIa 88 and 109.

body will be made in two types of material.
aluminum and ss. (I seems to have a tendency of making super heavy stuff lol.)

The sawback was a great kit, there are a couple of flaws but there`s nothing a little drill and a file cant fix.
Heres a list of things that will be done.

using axial gearbox as a transfer gear, topcad alu wheels, metal coupling
replace all Philip head screws with allen key button type ss screws
side mount the servo motor
moving the engine to the front
adding a two speed gearbox
cutting the frame to increase wheelbase
axle over leaf spring (the original jeep and LR88/109 had axle over leaf too)

pictures will come soon,
thats all for now, thanks for reading!

Some updates,I changed to axles over spring,as a result about 20mm of ground clearance are lost over at mid section, both Approach angle and departure angle have to be reduced. The exposed U bolts could caught on weeds and stuff, so I will need to sort that out later.

I added a 2 speed gearbox to the motor, (quite a bit of modification is needed) and squeeze in motor and the steering servo together.

Added axial "transfer gear" and topcad U-joints

Did a paper mock up of the front plate, made the front fender too.

Kind of bring back memories...haha. Thats all for now.

Engine compartment is almost completed.

I want a relatively flat back for my land rover 88/109 thus I didn't want any post sticking up, therefore I opt for a cantilever setup. The alu shock does nothing except to amplify the bouncing, the problem lies in the hole hidden in the eyelet of the upper shock housing, sealing the hole with some eproxy putty will create a "air tight" shock that will negate the bounce.

I looked into my spares parts stash left over after building the Terra, and found this. Its a rear shock mount for axial Terra.

And after a few hours, I came out with this.

I could swap for a shorter shock or angled the shock inwards, but currently the leafs can still maintain its max compression without the shock bottoming out so I think it will work for now (although it not very cosmetically pleasing).

Thanks for reading!

You're doing a lot of mods to the Sawback. Looking forward to watching this evolve.

Build is looking good man. I like all the different mods you're coming up with.
As far as your suspension, I'm running mine the same way, (spring-under axle suspension). The only thing I'd recommend is flipping your axle housings. You're spring perches that are cast into the axle is where your leaf spring mounts to. That centers your spring, and won't allow the axle to rotate under torque.

I drill a little hole at an angle on to the axle (just before it goes to the shaft), so not only it allows the U joints to run at a more gentle angle, it also centers the axle on the leafs.

Actually I took this idea from you. thanks! . The spring perches on the axle is slightly curve. If you screw it on upside down (on your setup), it will bent the leafs the other way (before it bends towards the leafs mounts again). The spring perches also lowers the car even more (by raising the axle on a spring under setup).

A lil update...

After extending the chassis

and connected the temporary gearbox

I got a working roller, (Please ignore the servo at the front, i am waiting for a micro shift servo, and it will be relocated to another location.)

Here's my take on shackle reversal...
The rear in stock form

The front

Flex shots..

I made the front mount out of a c channel bracket. Approach angle did suffer, but the caster angle seems alright...
Front travel more or less remain the same, not much difference. More testing is needed I guess.

Thats all for now. Thanks for reading!!! I hope you like it!!!
