Default Rocker Bogie suspension

can anyone give me some more info on Rocker Bogie suspension? like the suspension used on the mars rovers and such. it seems like it is kind of the ultimate rock crawling suspension. and why don't more people build more 6x6 crawlers? i have been making a solar 6x6 for a few months for my senior project and i have had a loootttt more fun making it then i did any other crawler i have built.

There are a few 6x6 rigs around here, but since comp rules don't allow more than 4 wheels, not many people are interested.

It is a cool concept though.

yeah i guess so, i think there should be like an innovation forum on here or something. i find the things that people build from scratch on here (like adjustable suspension with a servo ) are a lot more interesting then looking at the same comp rigs over and over and over. just some thoughts.

Agreed, though some peoples "innovations" can be old hat to others. To keep it sane you'd have to assign a moderator to read every build thread on the site to pluck out anything truly new and innovative. That would be a very tedious and time consuming task.

There are some cools things going on in several differnt forums, you just have to do the work and find them.

Not always. Sometimes the best new ideas are the simplest.

I have looked at several different versions of the 'rocker bogie' type suspension (Sojourner, Spirit & Opportunity, etc.) and there is something in the set-up that I can never see, something to link each side to the other. It does seem to be a preferred set-up. One thing though - all those rovers have a motor for each wheel, you cant run solid axles with that linkage. And they have steering motors on each wheel too, probably for the same reason. So six drive motors and six steering servos gets a bit complex compared to what we normally run in a comp crawler.

So although they have great ground clearance, articulation and manueverability they were never intended for on-the-edge crawling like we do for comps. Built for a different purpose, it would seem.

Not to discourage anyone, I'd love to see it done.

Cheers.

yeah i love 6x6, i'll try to post some pics of mine.

Yeah i guess tahts true that it might not be good for the kind of crawling we do, there is no "flexability" in that suspension like in ours. so if one of those flipped over it looks like it might break in half lol where as ours might just absorb a flip. idk here is my 6x6

solomace powell 2

solomace powell

i hope...

You might want to check out MINDS-i. They have build your own 6x6 kits and more. The website is www.mymindsi.com

That mindsi stuff is really interesting...the 6x6 looks cool as hell!

On a side note, why spend all that time and energy building awesome 6x6's, then go and put junk tires on 'em

Take a look at this six-wheeler! (If I could get the image on here somehow you could see it if not click here) If you look closely you can see that the chassis is made out of the same basic beams and connectors, that means you could redesign this chassis quickly and easily. Check out MINDS-i. www.mymindsi.com
