Default Gear strength question

How much do you think drilling a .080” hole threw a gear would weaken it? I am thinking of ways to attach a gear that originally spun on bearings to a shaft. The only ways that I can think of that accomplish that and allow for the gears to be replaced are keying the shaft and cutting a slot on the gear or drilling through the gear and shaft and sliding a pin down both. But because of the size of one of the gears I plan on using the height of the key would only be about .0625".

Picture of Traxxas 64t spur gear with .080” hole:

Cosmos set to PA Type 6 plastic (I don’t know what the spur gear is really made of) and 50lbs of force on the two gear teeth:

What's wrong with a hub adapter?

Make a plate with setscrew (to secure hub adapter to shaft) that bolts through the sides of the gear instead of through the gear teeth.

Made with Photoshop...phasers set to stun.

This way it's much easier to swap gears and it won't require much of a fuss to mount them. Most of the gears have holes in'm for friction pegs anyway.

The Traxxas Nitro Sport didn't run a slipper, it ran a hub adapter. I think you should still be able to find one.

Whats wrong is that I didn't think of that

This should make it even easier.

BTW, you gotta get away from Cosmos...you're starting to think like an engineer...making things complicated.

Go spend time on a farm somewhere and you'll learn how to make it work the easy way.

Haha, well set your phasers to PhotoWorks Release 2

To bad, that hub adapter won’t work for me. My idea uses three of these:

and some other things so all the shafts and adaptor will be custom.

You are right about the complicated thing. After I read your post I was thinking now why the hell didn’t I think of that? Well schools tomorrow and school always help me think of the easy way out.

Your idea uses a red x? That's a helluva design!

Here's a link for ya. Seems you can't remote load the image.

Yep, project/design/idea stupid center, red X, absolute center, just felt like copying Bill, (insert swear words here). And those are just names from today. 12:37AM guess I will read this post later today when I am awake and hope it is not stupid. Also there is a hidden motive in the 72kb picture. All I can say is that a certain picture of a Traxxas gear worked for me.
