| Get portals or not? As you can see in the picture I’ve managed to get q very low CG on my Toyzuki rig (left), very close to my capra. The thing is I’d like some more ground clearance since the capra gets a real advantage on that. If I get portals in the Toyzuki I will raise my CG a bit bit i’ll gain ground clearance. What don you guys recommend? If portals is what you suggest, what would you put? Thanks for your feedback! |

What doesn’t the truck do without portals? Portals will raise that COG, unless you can’t make a line . Josh make a case for a rear portal, but I’m still not a fan vs expense Hang up and Drive |

I'd rather drag the diff/skid than lose COG, even just a little.

Having the Capra, I would leave it as is. They will be fun requiring different different driving styles and approach. Getting comfortable with your rig will make up for the ground clearance. |

I just installed portals on my Truggy. It had Vanquish non-portals prior to that. Honestly, the Vanquish axles were just hanging up on everything to the point of annoyance. I’m all for working lines, dragging skids and axles, but these things were hanging like I threw a boat anchor out the back. Since installing the portals, I’ve probably driven that Truggy more in the past month than I did in the past year. The increase to COG was minimal (even with the hardbody Yota cab) and I found the benefits of the portals far outweighed any perceived increase in COG. All other things being equal, and given you’re running a lexan body, my guess is you will see your COG increase an extremely negligible amount. I’d say do what is gonna make you happy with the rig. Having said all that, there is good logic to Josh’s statement above. Last edited by mewalsh100; 12-24-2019 at 06:48 AM. |

Thanks to all of you guys for giving me your advice. I will not buy portals since I already have them on the Capra, I don’t need two cars to be the same. Each of them will have their advantages and disadvantages. Merry Christmas to you all !! |

Old thread, but I'm considering moving to portals on my g-speed tgh v3 build. I'm currently using ar44's, and am considering capra axles since the front pumpkin is in the center and would allow me to continue using the tgh forward motor mount. I'm curious what the portals in the rear only advantages are? A bit more clearance in the rear, obviously. Maybe helps steep uphill climbing as well? any insights would be greatly appreciated! I believe that the logic is you know where the front pumpkin is, so you can steer around obstacles, and the rear has more clearance for whatever you steer around. Issue is getting the gearing balanced as the portals gear down more. As this is older, my update is I love the portals on my SCX10III....... Hang up and Drive |

I have a couple TRXs with portals and the CG is better than other RC because the motor and trans are in line and sit lower. The portals don't turn as well but on the TRX4 I have selectable lockers which has its advantages wen it comes to maneuvering. My comp build has ar44 and turn much sharper which is a big thing in finding your line but clearance isn't as good. If it is a light weight class one or two comp build I would rather have the turning radius and non portals. In class 3 can run shorter tires (better COG) because of portals and still have good clearance . You have wider gates in class 3 so the turning radius isn't as big of a deal and you can have dig or 4 wheels steering to help with maneuvering. For trailing I like the extra clearance so bigger tires or portals. this is my opinion, I am not an expert. Last edited by MOguy; 10-20-2020 at 05:10 AM. |
