| Any free spool winches still out there?
I'm looking for a very strong winch with free spool feature. It doesn't seem like kms winches are still available. I need to be able to have the free spool option enabled by a servo servo. My other option is to custom make something. I was thinking of a dig transmission that has a freewheel position. I have plenty of room as this is going to be used in an rc crane. All ideas are welcome. |

The rc4wd 8274 has a push button to free spool... Plus the 8274 is the winch in 1:1 world. https://store.rc4wd.com/RC4WD-110-Wa...ch_p_5120.html It doesn't have the ability to free spool remotely... but you could maybe make something work ? Last edited by crunky; 04-10-2020 at 06:25 PM. |

The only free spool winches I've seen were engaged manually but yeah maybe you can come up with that side of things. Locked Up RC has Commando winches that have free spool, its a 3racing winch thats modified, they also have a kit version Commando RTR Winch System Commando Winch System - Kit |

Thanks for the ideas. I do have a 8274 and it might be a possibility. I'm sure I can fabricate some type of lever to press in the free spool rod with another servo, although I worry about reliability. What I'm working on is converting a vintage tonka crane to rc. The winch mechanics will be housed inside the crane body so i won't be able to get to them without a lot of disassembly. The free spool allows the clam bucket to fall and dig in. I was looking for some type of dig transfer case. When engaged it would allow a motor to drive the spool in or out. When a servo shifts the transfer case to freewheel the spool would be open to drop the bucket. I don't seem to see any compact dig transfer cases. I thought rc4wd had something like that at one time. |

Love the 8274 winch. It's a good powerful one and problem free.

I was thinking about it more and came up with another idea. How about a 2 speed transmission with the gear for the high speed removed? When you shift into high it would open spool.
