Default I am scale stupid, set me straight

i want to build this

but i dont know where to start. i would like leafs and irok tires but i dont know which rim size to start with. the real tires are 42's. i would like it to have leafs and maybe a two speed transmission. this would be just for fun, and maybe as a gift when done to my dad, as its is his K5.

which body, clod or proline?

Do you want a hard body or a lexan body?

buy a SCX-10 kit or Roller first, then add a body to it.

I dont really have a preference with the body, but i suppose the clod would be for the topless look and the lexan would be for the top on look.

do all the scx kits come with links?

Yes they have links but I don't think all of the them. Either just the uppers or just the lowers I think.

Unless you meant plastic links. In that case then they come with all the links, just not all aluminum.

yes, i meant as in a linked suspension. the plan is to run leafs.

are the axial axles the ones to use? what about the ones that look more authentic? i saw a whole bunch of ones on rc4wd, are any of them actually any good?

that's a killer K-5 rig, good luck with this build. Post it up when you get started, will be good.

Check out the Trail finder 2 - It's a leaf sprung truck that RC4wd produces and it comes with a 2 speed.

RC4WD Trail Finder 2 Truck Kit w/Mojave Body Set

You could see if the wheelbase (the TF2 is 11.3" I think) is close to Pro-Lines Blazer body.

Pro-Line Chevy Blazer - 1980

Also RPP Hobby makes some 1.55 wheels that are close to the wheels on that 1.1.

Gear Head 1.55 Krusher Wheels (4)

A clod buster body would be much closer to that year - but you would have to do some custom body modifications. It all really comes down to how much effort you want to put into it and your skill level.

I will always go with axial axles on any of my rigs that I plan to abuse just because they're cheap, they don't look to bad and they can be built to be bullet proof. That being said most of the RC4wd axles are very nice axles and much more realistic looking.

Yes they come with links, although may have to make custom links to fit the body properly.

If you go with the Clod body you will need to do some styrene work.

Here is an early 70's Blazer from a Clod clone body I did for someone a few years ago. There are a few builds of the correct years you are looking for on here, do a search. It is an easy mod to a Clod body though it has the right body lines. I would go with a hardbody for realism, they just look better

In my limited 2nd hand experience, Axle axles are much stronger than RC4WD's.
The best thing about RC4WD axles is the width. They are narrower than Axial's so the fit under many bodies better.

A few people make leaf springs conversion's for the SCX10.
GCM and RCBros come to mind.
GCM offers an entire leaf sprung chassis setup.

I built my leaf rig on Axial axles and chassis with RCBros leaf mounts and Chino Military Springs... and I love it. It's actually tough enough to comp.

Don't know who made it, but it was ABS, had a shortbed, fit Clod windows, the blower sat on top there was no hole in the hood, grill/bumper were one piece, the door handles were just etched into the body. I picked it up in a trade. I would guess it was a Radio Shack

Yes, that fugly truck body became this

They are a bit wider since I think the clod body is technically a 1/12th scale body. But look pretty good kinda like full size axles under an s-10.
