Details like, a little VW sticker in the middle of each hubcap?

Bah, stickers. Who needs stickers when you've got foil and epoxy?

JasonInAugusta 06-11-2007 03:46 PM

Built like a true modeler!

I haven't built statics in years.

JIA, me neither, but I still remember the techniques.

danielk 06-11-2007 07:43 PM

nope!

Trikster 06-11-2007 08:33 PM

The tape detracts from the coolness... LOL! I like how this is turning out.

could you explain exactly what your doing here better? im lost.

JasonInAugusta 06-11-2007 09:04 PM

He rubbed foil over a VW logo...like those on a hard beetle body.

Then he mixed epoxy and poured it into the back of the foil "mold" that he made.

When the epoxy cures it'll pop out of the epoxy and the parts will be ready to be sanded, installed, and painted.

Hubcap tutorial:

Once the epoxy is dry, turn over the foil. You'll have a bunch of "inny" logos like this:
http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/3007/img0947aj1.jpg

Cut 'em out (scissors will do if the epoxy hasn't set up 100% yet, use a Dremel if it has) and bore a hole in your hubcap, the same size as your logo:

http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/2249/img0948tb3.jpg

Glue 'em up:

Cover the old Ford Deluxe logo that you filled in with putty earlier with Bare-Metal foil, and mount'em on the wheels "thumbsup"

EDIT: If you don't have Big Deuce hubcaps to start with, you can cut up some plastic Easter eggs and cover them with chrome foil.

Big Mike 06-12-2007 07:20 AM

The frog wheels look a little more ""real".
I can't believe the tin-foil work, that is too cool.

JasonInAugusta 06-12-2007 09:25 AM

Stu, I'd use just the VW logo, leave the foil off the rest of the cap, and spray the whole thing with black, then Alclad chrome and clear.

microgoat 06-12-2007 08:38 PM

That's an idea. At least it'd be a uniform finish, and it'd be a hell of a lot quicker than sending them off to Chrome-tech.

Although the effect isn't that noticeable when you're more than 6 inches away. And Alclad over plastic isn't that much shinier than the foil. I'm gonna slack off and call it good enough. EeePee's just gonna elbow-drop it anyway

kingcobra 06-13-2007 04:09 AM

so.... got it painted yet? I wanna see!!!

As soon as the turn siggys get here, I can make the little rounded areas they sit on (look at some 1:1 pics, the Thing uses Beetle turn signals which have a rounded base) and then start painting.

I've reached the point of diminishing marginal returns on sanding. I could go for 100% awesome smooth finish, but I'd be sanding it until Christmas

This is where it's at right now. Bumpers are painted, body is 95%.

Big Mike 06-13-2007 06:58 AM

Man, I can't wait to see this with a paint job it is going to look great.

Crawler Noob 06-13-2007 10:22 AM
