Don's DNA R/C WK Pro Proto buildup

8 Attachment(s)
Well guys, this new build will house products I've had in the works for over a year. The chassis itself is something me and David (my local shakey vid guy) have been working on together. Keep in mind, due to lack of cnc equipment in the home office, some of the parts are partially or fully hand made as this is a prototype. The goal of this build is to build up a WK that addresses some of the issues that make the WK less than competitive with stock parts. This is not a simple bolt together kit, it will require some mods made to your stock transmission case in order for everything to fit properly. We made the chassis as narrow as it could possibly be, given the fact that narrow width is an advantage the WK trans has over other units. I trimmed the trans posts down leaving only enough to fill the counter-bored holes in the back side of the new chassis side plates. Some other filing is necessary to make everything clear but I did everything with cutters and an exacto. I also had to c’sink the holes in the lower bolt holes for the trans cover where the rear lower links attach between the chassis and skid replacing the stock bolts with countersunk bolts…if not the rod ends will rub on the stock bolt heads.

Here's a rundown

DNA R/C WK Pro chassis kit
DNA R/C Lower link mounts
DNA R/C WK Dig unit
DNA R/C WK upper link mounts
DNA R/C WK servo mount
DNA R/C WK Stalkers
WK axles with upgrade parts
WK transmission with alum gears
WK drive shafts
Holmes Hobbies 500 Puller
Caste Creations Sidewinder
More to come...

Here's some pics thus far, I'll be updating as I make progress over the next little bit.

Looks awesome so far Don...Can't wait to see how this rig turns out.It is cool though that DNA is putting a wide variety of chassis's out for damn near ever consumer and almost every rig.."thumbsup"

Harley 04-16-2009 11:18 AM

The chassis mounted motor plate is definitely innovative. Nice job Don "thumbsup"

CD13 04-16-2009 11:22 AM

Looks good Don,I remember you being the first person to make things for the WK.I guess you haven't gave up on making it competitive. "thumbsup"

Offroader5 04-16-2009 11:23 AM

Hmmm....this might be the ticket for my WK trans and axles that are just sitting all lonely and collecting dust. 8)

Harley 04-16-2009 11:26 AM

When did they open this section back up? Hasn't it been gone for about a year?

With that much beef it should not have any deflection of the spur and pinion.

It helps that the chassis sides are countersunk forcing the motor plate to stay centered and locked in place. Ok, I'm going to the garage to make some links for this thing...be back soon.

That makes it even better. "thumbsup"

BS on what...dangit, just realized no rod ends to put together links...time to hit the hobby shop

hitman46mod 04-16-2009 11:44 AM

I wish I had thought of the motor mount idea before I sunk money into an AX-10 drivetrain.
Awesome job."thumbsup"

This should be pretty cool. Now get to the store so we can see it all set up.

Hurry and go to the hobby store Don.You gotta have this thing done by today, plus you got video to shoot. So don't be getting sidetracked on your way to the hobby store...By the way...You get that e-mail I droped you?

thehopping1 04-16-2009 11:49 AM

 That looks awesome man. I like the chassis mounted motor plate, I don't think I've ever seen any thing like that. And the fact that you are keeping it so narrow is perfect. I might have to rethink my WK rebuild. Any ways, it shows that you put a lot of thought and effort into this. Keep it up."thumbsup"

Here's more pics. I still have to track down some Losi 4" crawler shocks...then it will be a roller. These wheels are temporary, new ones are on the way

I'm working on the steering setup now...have a few directions I could go with it, we shall see.

Offroader5 04-16-2009 04:50 PM

You should really do your best at trying to narrow that chassis up a bit. With it soooo wide...it's going to get hung up on the smallest of rocks.

Offroader5 04-16-2009 04:51 PM

:lol::lol::lol:

good looking rig don, cant wait for the video

engineerjoe 04-17-2009 11:06 AM

WOW!! that chassis is awesome. very innovative motor mounting "thumbsup"

I can't wait to see how it works.

Can you make me a shockless version?? Please??8) 8)

Goon 04-17-2009 11:40 AM

oh wow thats nice, how much will it all retail for?

Thanks guys...as far as shockless version goes, well I'm not sure about WK specific SSS (although WK axles work just fine on the AX SSS) but I can tell you I will most likely make some of our new leaf springs to try on this. :ror:

Not sure on price yet Goon, lemme get past prototyping first "thumbsup"

Been hard at it today on lots of projects...but I did manage to do some more work on this rig. Keep in mind I only have limiters in the front shocks thus far...and this currently has a tad more flex than I want. That being said, the suspension cycles extremely smooth on this guy and the shock mounting points offer plenty of adjustability using Losi 4" crawler shocks. Here's where she sits now.

Looks awesome so far!!. I have got to have one to complete my DNA collection!!
Have you thought about servo, batt and electronic placements?
Those shock axle mounts are great looking. If you flatten the tops of them you could put a battery /servo plate across them!
This was for a split pack but you could integrate a servo mount lipo plate easily. This was how i had my WK setup a while back ago.

Already have some special things almost finished for the servo, battery, and electronics...not to mention body posts and dig unit  I think about it all before I start cutting parts...keeps me from remaking too much stuff "thumbsup"

Thanks for the reply...def glad there are still guys around who can appreciate a WK build like this!

Cant wait to see more!! Just ordered a wk roller so i could build one when its released!!!!
The wk is underrated IMO, this is just what it needs.
My tranny and axles never failed on my old wk. And my kids absolutely beat it to death!!"thumbsup"

On the servo/batt mount...I've had these in production for quite some time...but am trying to go a different route on this kit I think.

I'm glad there are guys still around that create stuff like this for the Wheely King. I'm glued, keep it coming.

brokenb4 04-19-2009 10:16 PM

That looks like a hot setup, wish I would have seen it before I ordered a motor plate that hasn't even got here yet. I could have held off for a while longer.

k9popo 04-20-2009 12:05 AM

Very innovative Don, nice work"thumbsup"

mississippirocs 04-20-2009 10:35 AM

I am glad to hearr that the AX-SSS chassis will work on the WK axles since I have just WK axles with a R2D. I look foward to seeing some new products from DNA for the WK. Are the Axles link/shock mounts a DNA product? The stock ones suck and need replacing"thumbsup"

Thanks, not sure if an R2D will fit in a SSS tho. The lower link/shock mounts are something I'm working on with this build. The ones on this rig are part CNC cut and part hand made...I might do a bit of tweaking before making them a production all CNC part but the strength, smooth front/base, and adjustablity makes them way nicer than stock for sure "thumbsup"

KvilleKrawler 04-21-2009 05:20 PM

Wow, "thumbsup"

That is one awesome looking WK... I have a WK sitting on my shelf not doing anything. Once this is out you will def have an order from me for one of these. Well, this and a WK dig unit too.

Thanks KV "thumbsup"

Well, I went out today and took some outdoors pics of this thing. Today I got the steering setup good enough for some testing, and now I'm wiring up the speed control and receiver tonight for vids tomorrow (hopefully) Still waiting on the new shoes for this build...but they will definitely finish it off WELL , and the dig is still a week or two out.

mississippirocs 04-21-2009 08:55 PM

What wheels are those?

666 04-21-2009 08:58 PM

I believe they are the 4th set of wheels I ever cut back before I started making production rc parts. The set is 1 of 1. They are a heavy solid 1.25" wide billet wheel with black hard anodizing to protect from scratching...and they run my original "jaws" rock rings that somehow never made it to production either :ror:
