Default custom length shafts, step by step

things you need,

1. the shafts you plan on using, for me it was kosho part# ifw163
2. tubing to sleeve the shafts, brake line works good, but i ended up using 1/4 in stainless .028 wall.
3. something to cut with and a grinder.
4. map gas and torch head for the bottle
5. silver solder and flux

step 1.
take the shaft and just cut it in half to get it over with. i know, i know, with a new shaft you hate to just tear into it like that, but it's ok

step 2.
cut you a piece of tubing and start test fitting the shaft in the housing. little by little cut and grind as needed until the shaft is the length you need.

step 3.
now it's time for this stuff

put the flux on the shafts and some on the inside of the tube. next i use a little bench vise to hold the shaft upright as i start to solder

step 4. start applying heat and when it turns red start with the solder, it will soak it righ up.

step 5. when you have soldered the living sh!t out of it it will look just like that, sh!t

after it's cooled, obviously, i take a pair of pliers and scratch the dried flux off, then wash the shafts off with water. there usually purdy clean after that but i always like to use a wire wheel on them and with the stainless tubing it polished up nice.

so here is a picture of the finished shafts,

Great little write up buggy. Very much appreciated. You make it look so simple.

Where do you source your stainless tubing?

Wow cherry red? Only thing I see wrong is that. It really takes the temper out of the metal. I always had a problem flowing the solder when it got too hot. The only difference in the solder numbers is the temp at which it sweets. Heavier material you need a higher number cause it takes more heat. Great little tid bit though Gabe

Yeah I don't usually get it that hot, but when I do I don't ever have much trouble with the solder. Do you use a lot of flux when you do yours?

And as far as what temperature it sweets at, I don't think it matters much with what were doing, so id say any of it will work fine.
