Re: Derstine's HotRod willys I think you should get a small nikko boat motor and tranny, install it inside the engine. Run the water pump off the trans shaft, wired to throttle, sonthat the pulleys turn at throttle speed. If you want to see it work, i could send you a link to one i did in a 1/7 hot rod based off the traxxas dragster chassis. |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys yeah dude post that link! |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys Not hi-jacking, just posting for inspiration [http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l3...ps225f675d.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l3...ps1a92f690.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l3...pse5c36328.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l3...ps5fe2df5a.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l3...ps29563d86.jpg The trial vid Ford 427 powered up - YouTube Hope this helps!! If you choose to go this route, I have an extra motor and trans from a spare boat if you cant find one. Got mine from a Nikko Rippers boat, and will answer any question you have !!! I will pm you my build thread on URC so you can see it step by step. The engine is the first 7 or so pages.p |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys its all good man. i dont mind getting side tracked. this is gonna be sweet |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys well, made some sales this morning so got parts on the way. this thing should scoot with this under the hood. http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps282a25f8.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...psae95f43a.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps9a7a94cd.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...pse3cf5c83.jpg |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys Cant wait to see what you do to it. |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys so... tire options. want it to have a street look of course, but with a little bit of off-road look, looks like RC4wd comes through again (added axial tires), but which ones do you think i should go with? they all have their advantages i guess. the first two have the super soft and sticky compound which would be good for grip, but this is gonna be more of a parking lot rider, not a rock rider, and with the highspeed it will go the X2SS compound they probably won't last long. with that said the two face are the older harder compound which should last a little longer and look really good on there. or a 2.2 tire could just bee too big for the rat rod. if that's the case a 1.9 tire could an option. 2.2" Baja MTZ OD: 4.76" (121.1mm) Width: 2.08" (52.9mm) Inner Diameter: 2.2" (55.88mm) Advanced X2 SS Compound (Super Soft & Super Sticky) http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps93c71b1b.jpg Dick Cepek Mud Country OD:5.19" (132mm) Width:2.05" (52.2mm) Inner Diameter:2.2" (55.88mm) Fit 2.2 wheel only Advanced X2 SS Compound (Super Soft & Super Sticky) Each tire weight: 4.5 oz / 128 g http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...psd5b32fc8.jpg RC4WD two face Outer Diameter: 5.57" (141.5mm) Width: 1.81" (46mm) Inner Diameter: 2.2" (56mm) Directional tires Weight: 116g/4.1oz Advanced X3 Soft & Sticky Compound http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...pse7eb708a.jpg • Officially licensed by Maxxis • 2.2" x 5.5" (56mm x 140mm), 2.05" width (52mm) • Fits all 2.2 wheels • Directional tread pattern • Molded in our sticky R35 rubber compound http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps009ecc87.jpg • Officially licensed by BFGoodrich • 2.2" x 5.5" (56mm x 140mm), 1.95" width (50mm) • White Dot indicates R35 compound • Fits most 2.2 wheels http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps55ec5d8b.jpg |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys Of those options I like the 2 face, BUT the Axial 2.2 bfg krawlers or Maxxis treps would be hot too. |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys yeah, actually forgot about them. they actually look even better than the rc4wd tires. updated the post with those ones. both of them are almost better looking than the rc4wd ones. |

So they are big. Might need to go 1.9 on this thing. Well see |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys What aboot those tires that come on the EXO? They have a milder A/T look to them. |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys Or the new pit bull sc tires. 2.2/3.0 |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys those could work. ill start the mock up this weekend when i start getting the parts in. |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys got the engine today. its big, but its a big block, so thats the way its supposed to be. the body should be in thursday! then time to start work. gonna be a fun weekend. 1/6 Willys CJ2 Hot Rod Rat Rod Ford 427 engine first look - YouTube and some pics to see how big it is compared to my other willys. http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps1054e027.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...pse6aae9db.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...psbc6f91ba.jpg |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys not much yet. got the body in. its not a hasbro, but i knew that. its also 3/4" wider, which i already know won't work for this build, but could for a different future build. anyway, thanks for the body warriorsimi. it'll work for most of the mock up. i already found a replacement on flea bay. got a hasbro desert patrol for a steal. also got my parts from Rick @ Super Shafty, he hooked me up with some new plactics for the axles, and some great powder coated link mounts. i'll get them axles all together in a couple weeks, still waiting for some parts. so here are some mock-up shots. should be a HUGE trucks when done when you consider the wheel base. here are some shots. http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...psf4fd894e.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...pse4d0386e.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps7ba4f298.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...psbe81235f.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps82b4aba0.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...psbb48bee5.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps1289afb6.jpg |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys That thing looks sweet!! |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys Are you going to hook the suspension up to servo's so you can slam it when parked. |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys that could be cool. i think i might just try to make it run to start :) i will definitely keep that in mind though |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys I don't think it would be that hard. Let me know if you need a few ideas in the future. |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys me either, and i will ask when i get to that point. i have seen a few other guys do that sort of thing with cams and such. this thing is gonna be so cool. i dont think i have been excited for a build like this in a long time. |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys Are you going to use bellcrank steering. |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys i am gonna start with behind the axle steering. bell crank is the goal, but not totally necessary because if i can get behind the axle steering working it should look sweet. the servo should be well hidden where the radiator is gonna be. |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys Sweet , Can't wait to see how this one turns out. |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys Done yet? :flipoff: Bad ass man. I like the idea of a 2.2/3.0 SC rim on this. less chance of a tire rolling and flipping it over when doing flatspins on pavement. Used EXO stockers are cheap, and are "big n' little" like a hot rod should be. Keep it up, I want to drive it. |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys If I knew that your weren't going to use the wider body, I would have offered a trade for one of the Hasbro bodies I have stashed. |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys thanks guys. more to come after the weekend. really need to get this desert patrol body delivered before i make much more progress. i'll take a look at the EXO tires! trade... geez. another note. i have some negative camber knuckles for the front that are gonna make it look pretty sweet and should have the high speed turning quite a bit, even if i have some taller foams on there. |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys hey guys, got an update. the hasbro body came in, and it got all hacked up. no turning back now. i cut the seat stands off so i could build a bench seat, and put it low on the floor. also had to make some room for the rear axle. and cut a huge chunk out of the rear. the muffler had to come off. and the whole front end forward of the firewall is gone. http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps093f3589.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps01bcd634.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...pscecec495.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps1de68c44.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...pse0c6e621.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps50c5b627.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...psbc0967e3.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...psa1172e5d.jpg |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys Sweet! I did some cutting on mine the other day, that plastic smells like shit when you take the dremmel to it. |
Re: Derstine's HotRod willys i actually used a hack saw, and small wood saw. i only had to use the dremmel for the seats, and couple places i couldnt get a saw. this stuff does stink though! |
