AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Hey all, I have a 1/6th Willy's Jeep made by Hasbro, '02. My plan is to transform it into an "Era specific" Recon" rig. I've got some work done, but not all of it is set in stone. I'll get some pic's posted this weekend. Please post up any vavaluable and important info I may need to build this COOL ASS rig. Thank you, John. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Looking forward to the build!"thumbsup" |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Thanks Mike. This should be interesting, because I've read A LOT of build threads on these rigs. Here's a few pic's https://a2-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...fc/300x300.jpg https://a3-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...70/300x300.jpg https://a2-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...c1/300x300.jpg |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Did you weld up your own chassis design? I'd like to see some pics of just the chassis, it looks sturdy, and with the way the links are bolted up in the front, almost looks like a modified wishbone like you'd see on a street rod. Looks interesting."thumbsup" |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" The chassis is SCX10 that's been modified. I'll post some pic's soon. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" I originally build the chassis for this build. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/formu...off-build.html Unfortunately, I had to abandon it because there's no longer a place to run it😢 |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" I looked through that entire thread^, and it was a very interesting build, especially the frame "thumbsup" |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Thanks, I looked through it also for some decent chassis pic's, but couldn't find anything useful. I'll get some soon. I just mocked up a SS tierod. It inly took 3 attempts. :lmao: I hate wasting material. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Please post more pics Giantzman! |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" :lmao::flipoff::flipoff: I'll have some up soon. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Updates. https://a3-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...71/300x300.jpg https://a3-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...24/300x300.jpg https://a2-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...c5/300x300.jpg https://a2-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...c5/300x300.jpg https://a1-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...1b/300x300.jpg Last pic is mockup, I will make a stronger mount for the links. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" I got the hood hinge done. https://a3-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...64/300x300.jpg Not too happy with the results. Any suggestions? Thanks."thumbsup" |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" How are they attached? Glued or are you going to use screws and nuts?, maybe move them a little more out from center? Check some of the other later model builds? |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" There bolted in at the moment. I think I need a better hinge, these are odd. 1" along the pivot and 3/4" across. I can barely open the hood 90` |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Hey Mike, here are some close up pic's of the he altered chassis. https://a1-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...0b/300x300.jpg https://a1-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...a4/300x300.jpg https://a2-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...cf/300x300.jpg The original design was to mimic a 1:1 jeep suspension. 4 link with a panhard front and 4 link with tracking bar on the rear. Now it's only 4 link rear and 3 link front. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Here's the tierod that I made up. I used SS tubing and 3mm X 20mm long set screws with Traxxas rodends. https://a2-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...b4/300x300.jpg https://a3-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...72/300x300.jpg https://a1-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...88/300x300.jpg |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Looking good buddy! keep up the good work! |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Workin' on the roll cage. https://a2-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...74/300x300.jpg https://a1-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...0c/300x300.jpg https://a4-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...13/300x300.jpg https://a3-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...1e/300x300.jpg https://a4-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...e7/300x300.jpg Just gettin' started. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Gettin' closer. whataya think???????????????????? https://a1-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...10/300x300.jpg https://a3-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...c3/300x300.jpg Any thoughts or comments? ? |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" The tube for your cage looks a bit thin. I used 1/4" brake line for mine, and it doesn't even weigh a pound, and that was after brazing and adding threaded ends to where it bolts through the body. Or is that just a wire form you're using? On the hinges, they look like they're mounted right, with the hinge on the outside, you should get a better opening, maybe try some different hinges, I don't know. I really like they chassis, I'm interested on how the front suspension works, the rear looks fine. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" I agree with you Mike on the cage. It's 9/64" solid wire that's been crome plated. Haha, it's a file organizer. https://a3-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...ca/300x300.jpg On to the next item. The hinges are not square, there longer then they are wide. I ordered some 1/4 scale HD Dubro plastic hinges to try. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" The cage is temporary, just something to get it running. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Any more progress? Sunday is coming! |

If you are a little adventurous you could try to make your own. This was my first attempt and it turned out great and opens fully. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-G...litary_008.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-C...litary_009.jpg |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Mike, i got a set of 1/4 scale Dubro hinges and will work great. I just have to install them. Mudbeast, she's a roller and coming along pretty good. https://a2-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...ed/300x300.jpg |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Front end is almost done, just need to figure out the servo placement and linkages. https://a3-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...92/300x300.jpg https://a4-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...1e/300x300.jpg https://a1-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...43/300x300.jpg https://a3-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...b8/300x300.jpg https://a4-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...c5/300x300.jpg As you can see, the back inside of the tire rubs the shock. So I moved the top mounting point forward, no more rubbibg. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" I wonder how that will affect your suspension with the top of the shock forward, you might get some binding between the bottom of the shock and where it mounts on the axle during flex. Will it still rub if you make them vertical? if you keep them top-forward, but roll the top of the axle forward (so the pinion is aimed toward the transfer case output), that would help. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Looking good! It's coming along nicely! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" That's good info Mike. I do have options on the link/shock mounts. I'll playwith it tomorrow and see how it all cycles. Thanks. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Parts update: DU-BRO hinges came in and there going to work great. There much longer then th metal hinges I currently have installed. Here's what they look like. https://a3-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...08/300x300.jpg And here are there measurements. There about 1/16" thick. https://a3-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...97/300x300.jpg |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" After brainstorming, I realize that Mudbeast is on to something. The engine bay will last a lot longer with some r enforcement. This will take a lot more abuse with the pan then without. So, thanks Mudbeast. Mine is slightly different, only the floor and inner fenders. Whataya think? ?? https://a1-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...b7/300x300.jpg https://a3-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...33/300x300.jpg I'm hoping to get this faze buttoned up tomorrow. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/04...e3e35c93b9.jpg Mine is not much different than yours. It will work out fine. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" "thumbsup" I'll post up pic's when i'm done remaking the pan. it's to short for what I'm planning. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Almost done with the new pan and battery mount. Will post pic's soon. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Well, after 3 attempts at making a new pan, I finally have something worth posting. I struggled bending the SS sheet metal because the vice I was using didn't have the space required. So I had to dig out and lube up an old 2 way sliding vice. Rest assured I have it completed. 8) Here are some pic's. https://a1-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...da/300x300.jpg https://a1-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...5e/300x300.jpg https://a3-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...41/300x300.jpg https://a4-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...19/300x300.jpg I'm still posting more pic's, so when there done I'll post them. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Here are the smooth jaw vices I needed tto make the pan. https://a2-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...81/300x300.jpg https://a2-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...ab/300x300.jpg This shows that I'm working with 24g SS sheet for the pan. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" https://a3-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...e4/300x300.jpg Just dug out some 3/16" SS key stock. I have enough to make a front bumper with room for this. https://a4-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...0c/300x300.jpg |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Updates on the engine bay. Before trimming. https://a3-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...3e/300x300.jpg After trimming. https://a3-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...43/300x300.jpg |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Doing some test fitting of the new pan and looks good. https://a4-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...d0/300x300.jpg https://a2-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...ab/300x300.jpg This will allow me to keep the motor and trans weight about 3/8" lower on the frame. |
Re: AWIP, 1/6 Willy's Jeep. "Special Ops" Update: engine bay pan done and in. https://a4-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...30/300x300.jpg https://a4-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...d8/300x300.jpg https://a4-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...1f/300x300.jpg https://a2-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...3a/300x300.jpg https://a1-images.myspacecdn.com/ima...88/300x300.jpg Still a lot to do, but gettin' closer. |
