My 1:6th Willys Jeep build (GI Joe) Well, I figured I would start a thread on my build for these awesome rigs. My friend @Granite Bandit has inspired me to build one of these along with thanks to the pioneers @ZoSo, @BigSki, @Nomadpsd i am going to try to make this pic heavy and informative because it took me more researching and trying to get tips in building this baby. Plus the socalrc forums seem to be closed now, so it was harder to get info. Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk |

Re: My 1:6th Willys Jeep build (GI Joe) http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...706_203710.jpg Testing out placement for AX10 transmission, although BigSki's post mentioned mirroring the transmission to help with torque twist. I'll see what I can do Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk |
Re: My 1:6th Willys Jeep build (GI Joe) http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...707_235002.jpg Drilled holes and mounted the RC4WD Disruptor transfer case... Had troubles putting on the pin for the front driveshaft, so make sure the hole is big enough and driveshaft can be set before reinstalling the frame Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk |
Re: My 1:6th Willys Jeep build (GI Joe) http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...709_133848.jpg Test fitting links took a while due to measuring, test fitting, readjusting, mounting... Tedious process. I used 8/32 all thread rods and Traxxas #5347 rod ends. http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...709_135635.jpg Robinson Racing metal gears to upgrade the transmission http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...709_140147.jpg Use the bearings from the stock plastic idler gear http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...9_140448_1.jpg Swap the parts over to the metal gears http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...709_140541.jpg Reinstall gears and put grease Also, I used 32 pitch spur and pinion for added strength Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk |
Re: My 1:6th Willys Jeep build (GI Joe) Cut off and grind smooth front part of the frame, then cut off amd smooth out these nubs that stick out (with black stripes in the pic) http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...709_194142.jpg http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...709_194536.jpg Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk |
Re: My 1:6th Willys Jeep build (GI Joe) Lookin' good. Keep it up and have fun building. I have a suggestion, mount the rear upper link mounts above the top of the chassis as much as you can. It will help with climbing. I know there's not a whole lot of room, but do what you can. "thumbsup" |
Re: My 1:6th Willys Jeep build (GI Joe) http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...9_220436_1.jpg I'm using Axial SCX10 driveshafts...for reinforcement, I used the "ribs" from the parts trees and just cut off all the excess. The thicker part of the trees are perfect snug fit inside the male part of the driveshafts http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...9_221042_2.jpg Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk |
Re: My 1:6th Willys Jeep build (GI Joe) http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...710_111326.jpg Here, I am mirroring the transmission. http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...710_122500.jpg I used a 5mm + 2mm green aluminum spacers to take the place of the place of the spur gear back cover plate. http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...0_172948_1.jpg Here is the mirrored transmission mocked up in place where it is going (Post #5 has pic of position of standard transmission how Axial has it preassembled) Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk |
Re: My 1:6th Willys Jeep build (GI Joe) I had to hack some plastic forward of the transmission to clear the steering servo. http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...710_230304.jpg I installed the servo in the engine bay to have as much clearance for flex as possible...equivalent to CMS (chassis mounted servo). http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...711_001233.jpg Underneath http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...1_023140_1.jpg Servo mounted and tie rod mocked up with panhard bar mocked up underneath. Re: My 1:6th Willys Jeep build (GI Joe) http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...711_023150.jpg One end of panhard is screwed into axle Other end is secured to side of chassis with a Tamiya TLT link mount...same ones I used for mounting the suspension links Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk |
Re: My 1:6th Willys Jeep build (GI Joe) If you screwed the panhard to the axle, it may hinder the full movement of the steering to the left |
Re: My 1:6th Willys Jeep build (GI Joe) @Mike Flea I did screw it into axle..and yes, it does hinder quite a bit. Any suggestions? I will be upgrading to XR mod. But TJRC Products is out of longer brass tubes until about a week from now. Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk |

Re: My 1:6th Willys Jeep build (GI Joe) Great, thanks for the advice bro. I'll make it a 4 link front setup for now since I have the materials for it. I'll get a panhard on next placement order. Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk |
