Default Stock Axles LOSB1407 - is the rubber piece necessary?

Sorry, can't post a photo yet, but the stock axles LOSB1407 come with a small rubber piece that sits between the cup and axle shafts. Is this necessary or can I safely run without it?

Mine is disintegrated and I'd rather not buy new axles just for this piece.

Everything is completely stock.

Thanks!

you can buy small o rings at the hardware store that will work fine. I have replaced both and now looking into CVD's. I hope that they are better now.

I thought of that, but these seem to me opposite of o-rings - they are taller at the center than the sides. But if it worked for you I'll give it a shot.

What are they for anyway? Keep the axle shaft in place?
