| SDS Customz Project "Slinky" 6X6
Ive been trying to figure out what to build for my class 2, when a good friend(I may not call him that by the end of this build) proposed a body that he had laying around. Its one that I havent seen many built so it interested me greatly. Then it showed up- All that I can say is DAMB its big!! The body is a U500 civilian Unimog. In digging around I found this. I know its a toy truck!! All of the pics I found online of the 6X6 werent very good quality so if anyone finds or has one feel free to post it up. So I have a rough plan- Here are a few things on the "I would like to pull off" List I wanted to have portals (which I will build to get proper gearing) Maintain maximized ground clearance try and recover some of the CG from the big Hardbody that weighs in over 14oz before any tube. Make a 6X6 that acctually is compable with a tight turning radius(I have a few tricks up my sleeve that I'll let you in on later) --Im not exactly sure how this one will end up though I will see it through and comp it at "Northwest Scale Championships". I hope you guys enjoy the build as much as I have enjoyed coming up with ideas for it. Here is a list of some of the specs for the truck: U500 Unimog Hardbody Axles- 3 Losi worm drives (2 w/Hd worms and 1 w/sds customz through drive worm) All three hopefully will be fitted w/portals that will be adjustable from 1.4:1 to 2:1 gearing. they will offer an additional 3/4" of ground clearance. Motor- some sort of sensored brushless(will have to figure out a flavor as the build goes) Motor will be direct drive to the t-case T-Case-Most likely a GCM unit we will have to see though Steering will be handled by Hitec Tires- Right now Im leaning toward the Pitbulls or ?????? Winching duties- I wouldnt have anything other than the QS8274 I will post up more details as soon as I get some time to cut up some parts. Last edited by SDS Customz; 02-18-2012 at 11:38 PM. |

So I didn't get to far though I have the frame squared up and held together with some temp. cross members. Here is one that shows roughly the wheelbase I will be shooting for with this build! Last edited by SDS Customz; 02-22-2012 at 08:26 PM. |

| Re: SDS Customz Project "Slinky" 6X6 Ill be making a through drive worm gear!! I really wanted to capitolize on the ground clearance gain from the portals plus with 2:1 portals with the proper kv Sensored Brushless, I shouldnt need a trans at all which will make for a much cleaner build IMO.

This is gonna be awesome!! This body got alot of use a couple years ago, but you're right, you don't see it much anymore. Dez built one in 09 and it is still one of my favorite scalers to date. He still has it. |

Sweet!! I was going to build a Dickie Mog but found a easy ARTR. The Losi axles should work perfect. |

Nice I am going to keep an eye on this. I have some losi axles that I was thinking about using as a 4x4 unimog. I would like to see how the direct drive to the transfer case works out. Should get a bunch more wheel speed.

W/ the portals at 2:1 the overall gearing will be right at 43:1. should be just right for a 17.5 . At least that is my thoughts at this point. we shall see though

Dont worry I know your not sorry The Frame is more for mockup. I will most likely re-do the frame with a drop down for the t-case. At least now that you have enlightened me. Just waiting for parts to get here so I can look at drivline angles ect.

So I haven't made any headway as of yet, though I did locate a more complete body, which has definitely got me even more excited as I'm liking the look a little better with the bed ect. Let me know what you think |
