Unimog 6x6 full custom

Hi

This it's my project for Unimog 6x6. real 1/10 except the wheelbase. I don't want it to be too big. I want it be detailed but there's no "WOW" specs. SCX10 axles, ebay tires, Junfac beadlocks. 45t motor...

To start: steel frame rails

The body, build from styrene. It's my first scratchbuilt body so it's not perfect

Thank you! Yes, it was my first full-on scratchbuild. Very time consuming but fun

Sweet build! I'm also going to be starting a 6x6 build, so I'll definitely be following closely. Could you get a better pic of how the last axle links mount? Are they on the frame or attached to the middle axle?

Thanks!

The rear axles are both 4-link. The mount for the 3rd axle's links it's not very scale but was the better solution I came up at the time. I'm making a brand new chassis right because of the portals. More to come. Feel free to ask anything

Now it's time for the steering. It was my first try with a "servo on chassis" setup. Thankfully, The-Gamer beared with me all the way and gave the tips to make this work. It's all temporary for now. I'll make a proper axle mount for the new axle and the panhard will be more scale. The rod was only to define lenght

I see what you're saying about not being scale. They look like they would work though. That's a shame about making a new frame, this one looks really tough!

Yes, they work just fine and the mounts are exactly on the same positions as the ones for the 2nd axle. The new chassis will delay this project again but it will be worth it. It's closer to the real one.

One of the things I've been anxious to do were the side mirrors. The cab seems "naked" without them.

Here's the first finished one:

Another thing I've finish was the functional hatch. The hatch was there from the start but I had trouble figuring out out to make the mecanism to open. Nothing fancy but it works

Thanks. much appreciated...

Talking about portals, my first idea was machining them but after making the prototype, knew that with the shop's milling machine, my portals will be crude looking and very time consuming. With the dimensions of the prototype and with a friend who does 3d modeling for a living, started to make something better looking to 3d print

Came up with this, V1:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...pshcrhk0ls.png

After some trial and error with tolerances and plastic contraction, we had a functional portal

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psgbezj6gi.jpg

Mounted on the SCX10 axle. If you look closely, you can see that's something different on the axle

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2kin9gko.jpg

Because the portals add +9mm each side, I narrowed the axle 20mm and put those spherical ends

Thanks guys! I expected to be a quick build but I keep adding stuff to do...the portals weren't in the original plan, for example

Speaking of portals, these are the axle shafts for the front axle. Scratchbuilt for previous project, held great and didn't hurt me to narrow them to match the new axle width

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psmt0uqsvz.jpg

Also had to make the both rear axles' shafts. Better than cut stock ones. These are straight and easy to do. 6mm steel rod with some fabrication.Nothing fancy

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...ps95t8au30.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/...psit8ollu7.jpg

If you mount a stock shaft vs a new stub axle, can see that the width it's the same due to the design of the parts that replace the rear lockouts

Thanks :)

The Bruder cabs are 1/14, I think...I've seen builds with scx10 axles with the same problem as you...you could build one from scratch. And yes, patience is required :). But it's not a daunting task as it may look...

Re: Unimog 6x6 with portals

well, let me share the latest updates. I was delaying the new chassis for several reasons. One day, after work, had one of those "now or never" moments, blueprints in hand and 10m later:

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4452/...02879dc2_b.jpg

Looked out of scale, made of 16mm tubing but the 1:1 blueprints showed 17cm frame rails so it will work out

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4502/...309999de_b.jpg

Got a Helios 2sp a while ago on a deal and even if it's a small size 2sp gearbox, that size don't allow being on many builds. This 'mog has plenty of space for one.I don't really need 2sp but I dig the scale looks of it

In my current chassis, used a Scx10 skidplate but the new one has to be custom to accommodate the Helios.

Re: Unimog 6x6 with portals

Hi guys!

I don't updated this for a while but it's slowly going forward, one problem at a time.

Well, my new chassis has new link mounts so I have to reduce all the links. Also, the Helios it's longer than the previous transfer box so I needed shorter driveshafts. I could cut mine but my buddy The Gamer needed longer ones and we made a trade

The axles weren't really finished. There was some rubbing inside of the portals and against the rim. The rims only needed a bit of machining. Pretty tight,eh? :

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4464/...8416cf62_b.jpg

Now I have 2 rear axles looking like this, no frictions. Pretty smooth, actually

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4473/...90f6a493_b.jpg

The front parts are a different history. The steering was kind of limited because the dogbone cup was binding on the inside of these axle ends.

On the left, stock. On the right, what I had to dremel to solve the problem:
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4450/...793989a5_b.jpg

And how it looks without the axle housing:

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4481/...7b9fd841_b.jpg

That's all for now. I'm attacking the rear shock mounts next

It's like the real one. Front motor going to a transfer box and then to the wheels. The 2nd axle is a pass-through

Had to invert the location of the shock/spring because of the sxc10 axle. Uses a long scx10 spring and these nice 60mm shocks:

Hi!

Too much time has passed. Unimog still is a good truck to build but other project stole all the attention. Tired of having all the parts scattered in boxes, assembled everything to have something to look at

The chassis progressed slightly. Has a new crossmember, battery craddle and the rear shock mounts are all in place

This engine bay need lot of work but is doable. Was my first scratchbuilt body and my skills improved since 2014(or I'm more confident of being capable to do better stuff)

How the truck sits right now. The cab needs to be 15mm lower. Was on top of the rails on the photo...
