Default large scale newbie

This is my first post to this site and am new to r/c. I have been looking at the pics of the rigs in the large scale crawler section and after much thought have decided to try my hand at a large scale Maxx based build. I have a bunch of 1/4 stainless tube to make a frame out of and sheets of aluminum to make panels out of. My main question since i am new to all of this would be am i better of to buy parts and pieces for my build or to just buy the emaxx truck somewhere. I am in no hurry to do this and money is tight right now. Thanks for suggestions and am looking forward to much help along the way.
