Have you looked at any of the Axial scalers? They are quite nice and Proline makes several nice bodies that fit them....

i think too much as well.

go with the scx10, great platform to base a scale build off.

Another vote for the scx10, its fun to put together, and insanely fun to drive. However, if this is going to be your first crawler, you will have a blast with anything you get. You can always upgrade later.

Axial all the way.
Most capable performance.
Easy to build/work on.
Great parts availability.
Super fun!

SCX10 is definitely the popular choice, easy build, and very durable! I own two of them along with the highlift Tundra and the CC-01.

I think the CC-01 was the easiest build but it takes more work to make it crawl. Stock motor/esc is too fast and not enough torque. Plus does not include ball bearings.

The highlift Tundra is fun too but it takes a lot of time to build. My particular Tundra took over a month of acquiring upgrades, building, and configuring...especially since I have their multi-function unit.
Here's mine to show you what the Tundra can become: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7-JYbYrwWc

I definitely DO NOT recommend it as a first build.

How much are you looking to spend?

Might as well throw my $0.02 in . The scx-10 is a great truck for a beginner or a novice . It has tons of aftermarket support . These trucks are very capable and tunable . You cant go wrong with the scx-10 . Its an easy build for a newb also . The other rigs mentioned are also good , but the scx-10 is a better performer OTB IMO .
