Why do transmissions have so many gears, other than having output shafts going front and rear? Why don't RC boats need any gears? My main reason for asking is cause I feel like making one and I have to get my head around the way it works and where I could start.:-P Regards Nigel |

well trucks and cars need the gear reduction to get the weight moving... 5000 engine rpm reduced say 80 times for our crawlers... the boats i think usually work off a direct drive motor straight to the prop, they can do this because of the water, they need to move alot of water quickly.... 5000 engine rpm = 5000 rpm prop speed and to take it even further the airplanes have the exact opposite of cars and trucks, the motor speed gets multiplied so that the prop can more an extreme amount of air 5000rpm multiplied say at least 3 times = 15000 prop rpm Last edited by roadblock; 09-18-2006 at 04:04 AM. |

Thanks roadblock for the reply. Why don't they just make engines with that low down power and send it to the diff, would it be too much strain on the motor? Is it a sort of buffer zone inbetween the motor and wheels Thanks Nigel |
