Think about the future costs. If you go comp, then you will be spending some BIG $$. Having that said, a scaler is expensive to start with, but parts aren't that bad. I have an SCX10, so I am biased, but IMHO go with a scale truck. Put a low turn motor in it, and it rips! Not like a sct, but still really fun.

It's all a personal opinion. A comp style rig is a lot of money, a scaler is a lot of time. Comp rigs do crazy amazing things on the rocks, scalers look really cool on the trail. You just need to figure out your budget and what your wanting it to do and how its gonna look. Figure all that out now and save yourself a lot of money and headaches later.....

It also depends on if you are going to really drive your rig or not. Do you want to take the rig you just spent a lot of time making look real out on the rocks? They do get all scratched up. I have a SCX-10 but don't put a lot of little details on it that are just going to break off if it rolls over on the rocks.

Most certainly!

You are talking about two completely different driving styles. Both you can complete with, or just have fun with. I would recommend leaning more towards the scaler, they are fun just about anywhere. Crawlers are great, but without a good-sized mound of rocks to run on, can get boring quick.

This is just my 2¢. I started with comp and quickly pulled my pockets inside out just to compete and keep up. Don't misunderstand me, you can dump alot of $ into scale as well but the possibilities are endless, especially if you enjoy building!
Another aspect is, whats around you? Scale groups or comp?

I think the majority of us veterans started with a Comp based rig.....I switched over to the scalers.....

Its all about hanging out with cool people and enjoying the outdoors.....If only these damn allergies would go away.

For me it's scalers all the way, they look cool and can perform pretty well, seems like the comp crawlers are falling to the way side at the moment.. At least around this neck of the woods..

People who think that the newest parts are what win comps are dead wrong. Practice is everything in that aspect of this hobby. Learn to drive what you have and you will do well.

I have seen scalers sell for WAY more than a comp rig.

I think the reason scalers are so big is G6 style events and courses. Yeah pure performance is cool I am thinking about getting a MOA down the line but I like the Casualness of getting a bunch of people together and doing a trail run its a lot of fun and can still be pretty technical.

Chances are, once you get started you'll have at least one of each possible combination

2.2
1.9
1.55
Scaler
Shafty
MOA

The list could be endless....having fun is the common ingredient
