| Small 1/24 or 1/18 crawler - need recommendation
I am looking for a crawler or trail r/c in a 1/24 or 1/18 scale. Something smaller than my 1/10 cars to take with me when camping, vacationing, etc. Would prefer 4WD, front steering with scale look (doesn't have to be licensed body) over an actual crawler with 4WD and two steering servos (for simplicity sake). Would like to stay below $150. Any recommendations? |

I own both the Proline Ambush and the ECX Barrage and the Barrage is on par performance wise with the Ambush. My 5 y.o. has been beating on the Barrage with no issues except for drive shafts, but they are weak on both on these vehicles. The fix, I replaced them with some aluminum ones made for the WPL 1/16 RC vehicles, which you need to cut to length. They both crawl surprisingly well and on 2S 750mAh Lipo. The Barrage ESC does not have a Lipo cut off, but this was fixed by using a Lipo voltage tester with alarm plugged in the charge port when in use The motors are OK, a bit on the fast side, but upgradable with the RC4WD 1/18 transmission to get better low end control/torque or some other motor. I’ve got an RC4WD 1/18 Mini Gelande. It’s a fun little rig with super scale details. You’ve just got to be realistic about what you expect it to accomplish in terms of crawling. It’s make a great little “camp fire” rig tho.

I was looking at the Gelande because of the scale body but I am actually leaning toward Redcat Everest 16 for its crawling capabilities. If I get the Everest, I will definitely swap the body with something scale looking (even though it is going to sit high).

The redcat 16 is now last generation. The redcat and gen 1 ecx temper were pretty much the same truck. But how the temper has a gen 2, with some nice upgrades, much better axles, same width but without extenders, and without the mounts for the skidplates that just hang up on everything. true 4 link rather than the 3 link that redcat/temper gen 1 uses downside is it still uses a 2 in 1 rx/exc, but at least the servo is 1/10 scale |

Thanks for the info. I actually ordered Redcat Everest 16 from Amazon yesterday. It was $99 and I had some gift cards that I was able to use. Didn't know about the generation 2 of Temper and its upgrades. Still, I think that for my needs the Everest will be fine. Plus upgrading servo to a full size is cheaper than replacing RX, TX and ESC on the ECX.

Thanks but I will stick with the E16. I just simply do not like RX/EXC combo. If they are separate, I have some spare parts to get the truck working fast in case something fails. With the combos, you have to get an exact match.

I was considering Barage before I knew about the new Axial but decided that 1/24 scale is a bit too small.
