Default tlt axel pinions in goliath axels

i wanted to make a more comp worthy set of goliath axels so i got to thinking why cant i put a tlt pinion in the axel the gear tooth is the same this will allow me to run any tranny and driveshaft combo i want to run with the goliath axels so i tried it

first thing you need to go and get is 4 3/8" x 3/16" or .194" x 1/8 bushings or bearings (i just went with nylon bushings for now)

you will also need 2 new or used tlt pinions i have a spare set of tlt axels waiting for a tuber to get finished so i just used them and will get new ones for the tlt

then just attached the bushings to the pinion and apply to the axel

there is just as much of the pinion sticking out of the goliath housing as there is on the tlt case so you can put the goliath axels on any chassie and make you own wheel base

i kno i will prob strip out the plastic diff gear faster this way but now i can run a real tranny with some gearing and i will be able to crawl a whole lot better

let me kno what you think on this mod i posted it up b/c i havent seen it yet on the pti page so i wanted to help out other ppl with the goliath

Interesting. Let us know how the ring gear holds up.

Is there any way to make the tlt ring gears fit?

The TLT uses a one piece diff housing/ring gear, so there's not enough room in the axle housing.

What about milling the housing out out of the gear?

Here's a comparison photo of the two axles. Doesn't look like enough material to do any milling to me. Besides, it's not like TLT gears are indestructible either.

Very cool information. I'll have to keep that in mind. Hmmm now to order some TLT input gears.
But I would like to see a better look at that gear mesh. Also if you could take a photo of the two input bevel gears side-by-side for comparison.

Looks to me like the tooth count and depth of the teeth is incorrect on the pinion.

But it might crawl for a few days...

Do you have the ability to "preview" the pictures before you post them? These are so blurry that they are almost useless. Maybe check that the lens is clean.....

He's going for that glamor shots look. :-P

I'll see if I can get my hands on a TLT input pinion and take a photo. I'd like to see how this works anyway. I think I have a TLT around here I can borrow from someone.

I've never seen a tlt diff input shaft. Could the goliath pinion be modified to fit the shaft?

There should be a "macro" function on the camera. It's usually a flower icon. Turn that on when taking closeups. If I get a chance this weekend, I'll try to take some camparison shots.

this seems like it won't work very well. even if the pitch was right, using bushings as bearings is not a good mod. all it takes is a good amount of pressure and it will bind. and the ring gear is still plastic, with the right amount of force the steel pinion will strip the plasic ring. doesn't seem like a good investment. but neither are the pti axles anyway. PTI could have atleast put steel gears in there axles like everyone else . my 2 cents
