Turtle's Modified DF01

I have dreams of running 3 classes currently at our rally track, HOON 470, I thought the natural progression of racing is Rally, Trophy Trucks and now a Dakar class. The Dakar vehicles should be able to handle rougher terrain then either of the previous classes allowing for the track that gets torn up after the other two classes to be optimum for this class.

Since scale appeal was important and really a almost non existent market lead me to get a DF01. I was drawn to the full independent suspension, scale appearance and past knowledge, knowing the DF03 is a pretty solid platform and these two vehicles shared a lot of design characteristics. So the decision to get a DF01 would be apparent.

Yeah its kind of ugly, but with my love of Subaru and the higher price of the Racing Lancer I had to get the Porsche.

The internal limiters are currently not in the rear shocks allowing for the most ground clearance possible with this chassis, but it is a little high changing the rear track width quite a bit, after some testing it will probably come down.

Stock tires for the time being, they seem to be an odd size so a later tire change may occur after initial testing. Wheels are from my TB01 kit replacing the hideous orange wheels that came with the kit. Because this is a model from Tamiya that has been around a little while the battery compartment was made for the more round NIMH cells, so the battery compartment had to be modified for the square 2 cell hard case lipos I use. Squaring off the outside and trimming some chassis ribbing went fast and easy with a dremel and cutoff wheel.

And painted up to match the fleet. Electronics are still sitting in a pile, while I look for a working ESC.

Lots of cool details to the body like mirrors, snorkel, rear wing, light bar and lower bumper sections.

Lots to be done with this setup, but wanting to feel it out and see how it handles so far.
For electronics it currently has a Stock Tamiya motor, Savox 1251 servo, Spektrum SR3100 receiver, and some type of ESC that works.

More updates when parts come in."thumbsup"

Guess you need to change you name to "Tamiya Ty"!:mrgreen: Looking good Ty! What is the tire compound like? Like the rally blocks? Kinda digging the tires.

Ha, until the new HPI is released at least.

The tire compound is firm like the Rally Blocks, but the tread spacing is really close together, more suited for a hard pack surface and concrete. The other thing is they are too tall for the rally cars. But for a Dakar/truck class they should be ok, especially with a stock Tamiya motor... At least for now.

Drives pretty good, It needs a little bit of tuning, but not much at all. The stock Tamiya motor does feel pretty slow though. I will probably put something with a little more get up and go in it.

Yeah tons of ground clearance, I think this car could handle a hot motor and be pretty amazing.

I think I got some new tires for this, bigger, more tread. If I can get the body up a little, I will try them out.

Don't know how I didn't see this thread earlier. I am a Dakar nut, and I have been watching your rally thread for awhile.

You have such a great thing going on in your area, no doubt thanks to time you and others have put towards getting this going.

I have been looking at getting a DF01 since christmas, to go along with my dakar truck(8x8x4 Dakar Support Truck - Page 8 - Scale 4x4 R/C Forums) and MTDT.

It is almost certain now that I will be picking one of these up.

If you guys ever open a multi-axle Dakar class I will make the trip to compete!

Kudos on a nice model!

Zack

When we get a Dakar truck going I will let you know. Right now they just run on the rally tracks.

It was good when I was driving it. I needed the electronics for another project so sadly this has just been sitting on the shelf for a couple of months.

Want a deal on a used one? :ror:
