cbp27's DRX Build

I've always been a big rally fan so when the DRX gained some popularity and support I couldn't resist.

First change was the Kyosho radio system for a 2.4 Spektrum setup. The Team Orion motor and ESC are pretty good so far. Even the Kyosho servo isn't too bad, but that might get changed out soon. Otherwise I just painted the wheels black and added some LEDs up front for now.

Fresh out of the box.

Re: cbp27's DRX Build

On it's very first run I just used a small 1800mah lipo. This thing is so much fun! I only drove it on asphalt so far though. Next upgrade was adding 2 extra spider gears to all three diffs with some 5000wt oil. After I got my Gens Ace 5000mah 3S 40C lipos I took it outside only to see it was raining. That didn't stop me lol It was like drifting on ice. So much fun!

http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...1870-37310.jpg

Up to this point I only ran 2 lipos through it, the 1800 and a 5000. Since I'm at Penn State every day, which has an endless supply of asphalt and concrete all over campus, I decided why not drive it on campus? I used an overflow parking lot next to Beaver Stadium.

After getting bored with plain asphalt I walked around and found a nice patch of concrete. Bonus points for gravel and dust piles!

Here's the little troublemaker...or should I say Hoonigan
http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...1870-37304.jpg

Somehow I spent over an hour driving around on a single 5000mah lipo, which is hard to believe. I guess the stock gearing helped with that. But on the other hand, after running for so long the motor was super hot while the ESC was nice and cool with its little fan. Time for some new gearing...and tires.

Re: cbp27's DRX Build

This is the condition of the tires after 2 lipos through it. This is a rear tire, which has some negative camber and some toe in causing the uneven wear. The Kyosho tires are pretty grippy on asphalt/concrete and sure don't last very long. Luckily, Lars from Norway found some HPI wheels and Pro-Line street tires that fit nicely. I'd better get some and save the Kyosho tires for dirt.

After deciding on new gearing I wanted to get some other small upgrades. Integy motor heat sink with two fans, 12T and 14T Robinson pinions (stock is 16T), Traxxas 4mm links, Route 246 steering rack and some longer AE battery straps. With the new steering setup I had to relocate the servo.

That's it for now. I put another 5000 lipo through it today and the motor runs much cooler now with a 14T pinion, heat sink, and fans. Now it's super torquey and still has plenty of speed.

Black wheels look hot! Have you driven with the proline tyres yet? Are they road rage? Can you put extra LED's in the other 2 spots in the headlights - so you've got 3 lights each side?

Thanks. I have a thing for black wheels. I don't have the Pro-Line tires. The picture is from Lars from Norway who also hasn't tested them yet. And yes, they are the 1/10th buggy Road Rage tires (#1102-00). You can put LEDs in the other spots if you want. "thumbsup"

Got enough fans?:lmao:

Those bodies look really good. The addition of the lights is a nice touch.

I'm not familiar with Kyosho. What does adding the 2 gears do?

Thanks. Each differential only has one rod with a gear on each end. Adding a second rod (forming a '+' shape) with another two gears increases the strength of each diff. Here's a picture from Turtle.

HPI Ultra 5 Wheel - #100868
Pro-Line Road Rage 2.2 Street Tires (1/10 Buggy) - 1102-00

And for anyone interested in the Traxxas link conversion parts here are the numbers. I decided to do this upgrade along with the Route 246 aluminum steering kit just to take care of any slop in the steering. It's mainly to look pretty.

Traxxas Aluminum Turnbuckle Set Blue (Rustler/Stampede) - TRA3741A
This includes two 39mm and two 49mm camber links. The 39's are used on the front steering links, and the 49's are used in the rear.

Traxxas Turnbuckle Blue (39mm link) - TRA3737A
This is used to connect the servo arm and steering assembly.

Traxxas Rod Ends w/Hollow Balls (Revo) - TRA5347
You'll need to replace the included rod ends with these shorter ones.

Another option part that I got (and pretty cheap too) is Team Associated's battery straps (#ASC89506). I was using some Axial battery straps that were held together by less than one inch. These new straps are almost 12" long (I had to cut them shorter), and have a nice sturdy 90 degree bent buckle. It's really nice for hard-case lipos, especially if they're 3S or larger.

I thought the plus with 4 gears was kind of a standard on diffs. Thanks for the info.

I thought the same. Maybe Kyosho was trying to save a penny? lol

Still running with (almost) no problems. The other day I lost a wheel nut. Make sure these flange-style nuts are always tightened, because once they're loose, they'll come completely off. Better yet, just go get some nylon-insert lock nuts. I made a trip to Lowe's today with one of the Kyosho nuts and found out they are M6 (6mm), not M5. A little bag of 4 nuts only costs about 80¢ there. Other than that, everything is running fine. "thumbsup"

Re: cbp27's DRX Build

I finally caved in an ordered some more parts. My tires are almost slicks and I felt like replacing the servo. This car is awesome, but the body has taken a beating. I've done dozens of rolls, jumps, end-over-end flips, and hit almost every object in my garage lol It's only missing a few small pieces and the spoiler's fins, but the whole front end is cracked up. I used some lexan and Goop to fix it for now. I just wish the body was more durable.

I also just found this large gash. Not sure how that happend. I have the AE chassis protector on the way too.

Did you shoe goo the body before it broke, or did you only add it after?

I used it after it broke. I'll goop the next body before I run it. "thumbsup" These bodies are pricey.

Re: cbp27's DRX Build

I got a Hitec 645MG servo last weekend and put a few packs through it. The body, wheels, and tires have taken a serious beating and even all the light buckets have fallen out.

http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...1870-38416.jpg

I decided to give it some TLC the other day and cleaned it up. I used Goop to permanently secure the light buckets and fix all the cracks. A black sharpie easily cleaned up the wheels and I removed the extra decals.

After a short run today I found a package by the front door. My wheels and tires! I got HPI 2.2 mesh wheels and the Pro-Line Road Rage tires. I had to drill out the holes in the wheels to fit the DRX's large axles. These tires aren't a perfect fit on the wheels but they should work. I also maxed out the preload to help with onroad driving. Hopefully I can test them out tomorrow before the rain starts.
