Default Hi folks. Brand new RS10 and a 100% newbie

1979 I destroyed my knee at work and as I rehabbed my wife bought me a little RC jeep kit to keep me occupied. Fast forward to now and I am recovered from having that knee replaced with a new metal one and my wife surprised me with a brand new RS10 XT.

Though I had that other rc car 34 years ago, I am as a big newbie and will be reading all these threads closely as I make improvements and modifications. Already bent the motor leads back so I didn't hurt it right off the back. Thing really works good and I really like the body style of the new one.

I'm certain I'll have plenty of questions........john

(i'm also an old guy, 45) - lots of new technology in the rc world (still have a GrassHopper- heavy mods done) - have learned a ton from this site and local guys over the last year.

Lots of simple cheap modifications to keep the RS10 going, and a few upgrades that will keep a couple breaking issues away.

Will do. Have thumbed thru them quickly and have addressed the loose screws and motor wire/tire interference issue. Tonight I will "attempt" to read thru all the must do's so I don't hurt it.

Thanks for the advice

Something will break (most likely a servo) then you will replace that broken part with an upgrade, then without knowing it you have caught the disease.
I was pretty happy with mine when it was stock, and its far from stock now lol.
As the chopfather mentioned, read the stickies (and everyone else's threads for that matter) and you will see what can be done with these entry level cheap and cheerful little beasts.
Some of the best mods i have done so far have been free or incredibly cheap.
As for your charger concerns, buy a cheapo imax b6 off ebay, while your there buy some li-po batteries and a cutoff, mine went from lasting 10-15 mins to about 45
Good luck and happy crawling.

Thank you Dungas. I already love it. What fun. Wonder how long the servos are going to last? LOL

I looked into the Imax B6 charger and am confused. There are some with a "halogram" and some without the "halogram". Not sure what that does. Do I need the one with the halogram? Seems there's a considerable difference in price and not quite sure what the halogram feature does.

Thanks again everyone

So the hologram you speak of is apparently a sign of authenticity, and having just checked mine it is apparently a chinese clone lol.
Meh, whatever the case it works fine and cost me about au $20 with free postage.

Well, I managed to destroy the front servo just like everyone predicted. Gonna have to pick up a couple servos AND a couple steering arms. The stock arms flex a bunch!

Reading thru all the threads here, there seems to be a wide choice of servos but what I haven't found is there a "standard" or "preferred" servo or is just a basic one with metal gears sufficient and realistically, they're all pretty much the same?

John

I think that the metal gear servos from crawford performance, hitec 645, and tower pro's were the 3 that I remember seeing most in the threads.

You get what you pay for with servos, also some are faster than others. I paid the lowest dollar amount i could find, and have had to replace 2 now. And being the tightarse i am, i found even cheaper ones on ebay to replace them with, guess time will tell how they do.

The t-pro 996r is good for a cheap servo. But if you get one of the clones it wont last. My original t-pro i got from tower hobbies lasted me over a year and it never broke the motor just got tired and weak. My buddy got 6 of them cheap on e-bay and i told him they were great servos. None of those ones lasted more then a few weeks. If you get to nice of a servo then you will need to get a better esc or a bec to power it.

If your looking for a balance between cheap and quality i run solar D772 servos from hobbypartz.com. run about 17$ and i have had 6 of them with the oldest being a year old and all are still going. Rated at 400oz at 7.4v, 300oz at 5.5.

There are several guys on eBay that part out brand new Traxxas Rc's. I replaced my servos with waterproof 2076's for $17.
