| Making a cooler
Crunky had something of interest to me and we made a deal, bartering for some handmade scale goodies. He has this old Coleman cooler he wanted to replicate in 1:10 scale so I thought I'd give it a try. He gave me the overall dimensions (22.5Wx13.5Dx16H) so first thing I did was extrapolate some of the other dimensions from the photos, like how tall the base white part is (I figured about 3"), etc. Took all these dimensions and started cutting the styrene. I cut out the long and short sides using 0.060 for the base structure of the box. then I took one long and one short, taped them together and used the metal ruler on the inside to make a square corner, then hit them lightly with some tenax7R did that again, then joined the two "L's" to form the rectangle. that was hard work...time for a break. panettone and a bit of desert wine... the breaks are very important, lol. I figured the red part of the base was about 11" so I cut some 0.020 for that, cutting out the rectangle for the handle. That cut-out I assumed was about 4x3. with those two short ends glued on I glued the long sides on keeping them long. then trimming them to the short sides. now I have this time for another break, lol... now I took a small metal file and started to shape the rounded edges oh, and then I went back to cut out the half circle for the handle that I forgot to cut out beforehand. hmm, maybe the breaks aren't helping as much as I thought, lol. I cut the top out of 0.040 right to the size of the 0.060 inner box. I also cut out strips that were just taller than the 0.040 thickness out of 0.020. those strips will become the raised edge of the top. I set the strip standing on edge next to the top, using the metal ruler to hold it vertical against the top. Then I hit it with a touch of tenax again. the strips are cut longer so that you can bend them around the edge of the top, which I slightly rounded with a file. Then more tenax. Then I used tape on the inside as a hinge for the time being. Its the best I could come up with. I haven't made the bottom yet for this reason. This is what I got done tonight in about 1 hr. Next is a bit of sanding, a little detail at the front of the lid (handle and lock) then paint the red and silver. Last edited by pantablo; 12-21-2008 at 02:10 AM. |

Love the detail, not an expensive piece of plastic like some places. Nice job. |

The trick with "breaks" is to make sure that you don't take them, lol. Just have the booze and food on hand so you don't have to stop. lol Great work Pablo. Styrene is too fun. |

thanks guys. having a bit of a time with the hinges. Made a cutout for the nylon airplane hinges but havent been able to fasten them with adhesives to the body of the cooler. Its that its too short and the CA keeps getting on the hinge itself, locking it. now I am trying to screw it to the base. First type of tiny airplane wood screw wont work so I need to try a tiny screw/nut combo... Quote:

I settled on M2 nuts and bolts, through bolted. works fine but heads are a bit bigger than I would have wanted, but its what I had on hand. Threw a coat of red on it and it comes to life! here's the screw heads holding on the one hinge, before getting red paint also. filed the edge of some styrene into a round shape and cut some handles out cut the front lid handle and lock, painted them all silver and called it a night. in context |

thanks everyone. I'm sure Crunky will thoroughly enjoy it, as I've enjoyed building it. definitely. Wonder if you can hook Crunky up with one. would finish it off nicely... edit: scale reference Last edited by pantablo; 12-24-2008 at 01:39 AM. |

Awesome work Pablo!! You make styrene work look so easy. I don't always have the patients for that. If I wanted patients I'd be a doctor. |
