| Surf's up!
I got the notion to do a surf inspired build a couple weeks ago. So I started making a couple surfboards. For me it was easiest to cut up the Tamiya long boards, use the fins as templates to make my own and use the center line decals for the new short boards. Here is how it starts. I drew out the shape I wanted then cut it out with the dremel, I put more curve in the board heating it with a MAPP gas torch then I shaped the boards using a bench grinding at first followed by some hand files and sand paper. The fins where made in the same way then attached to the board using CA glue. After I was done sanding I added the center line decal. Then I created a "wax texture with drops of medium CA glue hit with accelerator right after. Once all that was set I added a decal signed it and coated it in a gloss clear coat. I didn't want to use anything but clear coat so I filled the old fin holes with CA glue and sanded the board so the dust would settle into the glue. The main reason for using clear coat was for the plastic to naturally yellow over time, this will give these boards and authentic look after sitting in the sun. Boards measure about 6.5" tip to tail. More beach supplies as I build them. -Ty |

Nice way to spruce up an otherwise dull scale accessory. You are very clever using the CA/accelerant to simulate wax. |

Ha If I make another Im building a surfboard rack! I have had a wanted add up for a while now and have only gotten one surfboard , luckily I had one from my hilift I bought years ago. I would love to make a ton of these. But Im not sure what plastic to make them out of, hence making them out of the Tamiya boards. Does anyone know of a thick clear-ish/ white plastic that is rigid?

Ty..use cutting board... otherwise you could laminate lexan using Weld-On #3 solvent...you could also use acrylic, abs and styrene all with the same cement...theyll bond to each other too. Last edited by rmdesignworks; 09-12-2012 at 06:43 PM. |

The two boards I have are all done. I used some old servo wire to make a leash, I think it will work, I don't even mind the ankle strap too much. I went ahead and made a skim board out of what was left of one of the boards. Just like the one I had when I was a kid. With the other extra piece I am going to try my hand at a boogie board. I am still hoping to pick up a couple more boards to try some different shapes.

Thanks buddy! I would start my own surf shop if I could find more of the material they used to make those boards. |

| Re: Surf's up! Im not a Colorado local, I grew up in Oceanside and could see the ocean from my house. Its part of my past that I don't forget about. Plus my dad was a crazy surfer and I am part fish. Thanks man. I had that when I was a kid, it is actually probably still in boxes of old toys at my mom's house. Quote:
