Default BFR's Gooseneck

I guess I can call it - BFG (Big ******* Gooseneck)
This will be for BFR (Big Fing rig) Double J's BFR

Well I finally got something done on the trailer. And decided to make it's own thread of the build.

I've allready made the axles out of 1/4" brake line and 5/16" brake line. Brazed a 6-32 bolt on the end of the 1/4" line so this will be the solid part and will move inside the 5/16" line. No good pics of it but just some info. It will be tandem axle.

The trailer will have 4 2.2 moabs for wheels.

As it sites right now it is 42" long not quite 1:6 scale but larger than 1:8. for a scaled 20 - 24 footer.

I have brazed the joints on one side till I can get the welder I'm borrowing.

Any way the pics.
The start. I took the blue prints from 1:1 and scaled it down to a 1:8 scale. the one for this build is bigger because the BFR is a larger than normal rig.

Looking good Double J, what do you plan on using to cover the deck.

I'll be making a regular hitched flat bead trailer to complement the gooseneck.

after I finish the bumpers.

Wow, I've never seen a rig that makes Moabs look small

Are those brake-line axles going to be strong enough?

Thanks goat.

The brake line axles do have me concerned as I'm not really happy with em. I wanted to come up with something I could use bearings in but with limited supplies this is what I came up with in a pinch to get the right fit. If I keep it I may add a "back bone" to em that will come right off the leafs.

Just a thought, but have you considered using a larger diamater tube? It will give you a little more strength and you can run the smaller brakeline tube through the middle for added strength.

Yeah. I'm going to run by the hardware store today so I'm going to look for a better set up. Maybe steel rod instead of brake line. I'm going to take some bearings that I have with me to get a good fit.

Are the tires attached to the brake line? If so you could run that inside of a larger tube... or maybe that was what you were getting at in the first place.

Are the foams in the MOABS going to support the weight of that trailer plus the weight of a rig?

I'm going to narrow the wheels and keep the full foams in em. If that doesn't hold up then I'll look for other options. If you have any ideas on wheel and tires that may be a bit stiffer, I'm open to opinions.

The axle is made up like this.
1/4" brake line with a washer and 6-32 bolts (heads cut off) brazed to the ends for the nut and hold the wheels on. Then I sleaved a 5/16" brake line over it. I have some other tubing that is about 1/2" round that I may try out.

Have you looked into wheels/tires for quarter scale airplanes. They are usually solid foam, and have even more of a trailer tire look to them. Might have to do some work to fit hubs to them, but they would definately hold the weight.

Id use solid cold rolled rod for the shaft and have those fit in the ID of some small ball bearings that are then captured in less than an 1"(x2 per shaft) of of tubing with the right ID for the bearing OD. Braze or tack weld a washer on the ends to hold it in place after you braze or tack weld the larger tube to the frame so you don't have the bearings in it when doing as much heat adding as you can.

You can order small lengths of tubing from onlinemetals.com and bearings are easily found on mcmastercarr.com . I use both regularly for larger projects Ive been working on and the service is always fast.

I barely finished oredering all the parts for my first RC build and I already found an International body and am making plans for trailer and tow rig much like yourself, this hobby is addicting.

I can get the stuff locally for about the same cost. I've just been trying to use what I have around. And I'll be using leafs so the axles will not be brazed to the frame.

cjkranwinkle@cableone.net = thanks for the link but I beleive it may be a little on the small size, but I'm looking into it further. 15" long on a 42" trailer seems kinda small anyway. I'll have to hit up toys-r-us to see if they have em there.
