El cheapo adjustable motor mount

If you are like me and have a limited budget but need an adjustable motor mount here's a quick fix: Slot the upper motor mount holes in the gearbox(aka mudcow) and make an eccentric out of a flat piece of aluminum to hold the motor from moving. Simply loosen the screws and rotate the eccentric till proper gear mesh is achieved and then re-tighten

I was gonna try this , Just wanted to do a little search to see. I can't see your pic but I think I have the same idea.

Here's some pics I believe that are close to what you are talking about. I found them on this site.

Everyone knows you can't crawl a stock Clod, they're just to damn fast. But with fixed motor mounting holes you're kind of stuck with the same old pinion gear. Not any more. Our simple adjustable motor mount lets you run any pinion from 8T up to 20T by allowing the motor to move closer to (or further away from) the internal gears. Again, made from 6061 2.5mm plate and provided with all mounting hardware, all you need to do is Drift-Out the upper mounting hole in your diff case the same as the motor mount and away you go. Sold In Pairs.

If you remove the brass inserts and use a motor with 4 optional holes to mount, use the furthers to one side thus pushing the motor more toward the spur. I do this and can use 8 or 9 tooth pinions

Thank you insanerc ;-)

And rcracer Is there any triming needed to make this MOD?

rcracer 05-14-2006 08:43 PM

I haven't had to mod the gear case much, depending on what size pinion you run. I have been able to mesh a 9 tooth without mod, but an 8 tooth I had to drill out the mounting holes another 1/32

PROTOTYPE 05-14-2006 09:18 PM

Hmm good to know. I need to find some 8 and 9 tooth .

Torredo 05-16-2006 06:25 AM

This is a great mod and cheap at that for sure but...
To make it easier to set up your mesh why not do this:

1. Cut out a section (Yellow) in the plate
2. Cut a scrap piece of lexan to cover the hole slightly bigger Dia.
3. Put a small bead of black urethane around the outter Dia.
4. Place the pre-cut piece of lexan over the hole and let stand for a few hours.

rcracer 05-16-2006 06:34 AM

Or make it entirely out of clear lexan ;)

Torredo 05-18-2006 08:49 PM

true....but it wouldnt look aa good!

Thanks for the tip. I'm getting ready to try this on my truck. I just don't understand why I would need to remove the brass inserts though. Do you guys have any ideas?

Nice find.

thanks

Nando 09-15-2006 08:47 AM

if you dont use the brass insert tubes cant you crack the gearcase from over-tightening? and if its not tight enuff slippage/geardamage?

clod booster 09-15-2006 10:27 AM

you sand them down just a little to allow it to be slightly tighter and you use a washer to get more contact
