What parts build a strong super axle?

I have a set of clod axles in the mail. They will be used for a super build. I have the wheels and 23mm adapters. I plan on using handwound 45t lathe motors and this is what I plan on purchasing:

Integy metal gear set
Thundertech adjustable motor mounts
Thundertech CVD's

Are aluminum knuckles, bearing kits, and aluminum axle tubes needed to strengthen the axle?

thanks

Not needed really but help, depends on how hard you run your rig really., If you take alot of falls the tubes and knuckles would be a good investment. If your running lathe motors the metal gears are not really necessary.

Metal gears aren't needed even with a set of handwounds like holmes or JP's?

I have broken several stock tubes and knuckles, not to mention when you snap the tube in half it bends the shaft to. I switched to all aluminum and will never build another clod axle without it. I run stock gears and a CPE locker assembly. I have never had any issues with the gears.

I now build all my Clods with the metal tubes but still use the OEM gears.

Using this combination I have experienced no problems, no breakages.

I'd recommend the stock gears, plastic gearcase, and aluminum tubes and knuckles. Bearings (rubber shielded) also.

I know of many high power combinations running our lockers and stock gears without a failure. Those gears are REALLY strong and can stand up to a lot of abuse.

I would run stock cases,Jp's knuckles,Integy tubes,CVD's.
As for the gears I think it depends on what pinion you plan on using.

With a good 3 cell lipo 45t or 35t motor if you use 6 or 7 tooth pinions I would go with metal gears if you are going to use a 8 or 9 tooth pinion plastic gears work great.

hey

I have broken a couple stock gears sets, even in comp setings. I have the full integy gears and have not had a failure in 2 years now.

If I were to buy everything new now;

- CVDs front and back
- Integy spool (leave the other gears stock)
- ALU axle tubes and knuckles (maybe even the case depending on the style of servo mounts)
- good bearings

I stripped both sets of Gears in my Super Clod at Crawlaplooza with 60T CrawlMax's.. With in just 2 courses and never even jammed them up. I set the crawler down for the 3rd course and never made it past the start line.

Not even the Warriors. I was on 8t and 3 cell Lipo.... If you make the jump to 3 cell.. Metal gears are a must.

I'm running

Integy Al gears for em all. Al Tubes, JP Al knuckles and TTCVD's

sierradmax 02-18-2009 08:26 PM

for those running TT CVD's, will they work with the integy metal spool? Also, I have a set of 23mm adapters...specifically these.

Am I going to be ok or do I need to buy something else to make them work.

You will need some Longer Bolts, not Barrel nuts to use those Adpaters. The Integy Spools work fine with TTR CVD's.

sierradmax 02-19-2009 08:47 PM

well, I placed a few orders...
parts will be added to both axles

TT CVD's
TT adjustable motor mounts
Yeah racing bearings
JP knuckles
Integy axle tubes
Integy aluminum gears
7,8,9 tooth pinions

Axles powered by a set of JP's Warrior 2 45t's
