As far as I know, this is the first time anyone has tried this with a Clod that's intended for crawling.



That's a pair of Revolver Outrunners from JohnRobHolmes. I'll be using a pair of Mamba 25s to power them. They weigh 3 oz. less than a standard 540 size motor, have roughly the same RPM/Volt, and the controllers open up a wide range of possibilities that aren't available with brushed controllers.

Should have it on the rocks this weekend.

I've always thought about this, just never had the time to do the research to make it work. Seems like this and a combination of under the knuckle batterys would make for the ultimate COG

Nah, not too worried about the dig, just want to test them vs. 55 turn motors.

I'll be running them on independently on the DX6 as well as on a "Y harness with the DX3.

Hey I know tons about brushless Do you have the usb link because if not you just wasted the money for those ESC's the Tekin mini rage is good, the Hacker Quark 33
is great also the Pheonix 35 is great just be carful of heat because of stress also what battery packs are you running because if your battery's are not cycled that produce major cogging in your motors J

So your running one motor/speedo in the normal direction, and one in a reversed rotation? Is that gonna hurt the speedo by overheating it? Just asking cause I Have never messed with brushless and was told you could not make a brushless motor a reverse rotation motor. Sweet none the less.

The Novak brushless (and other sensored setups) are designed to rotate in the "normal" direction.

With sensorless motors and controllers all you have to do is switch the plug position of any two of the three wires to reverse rotation of the motor. Pretty easy.

For those interested, JPS has just completed a new axle housing for use with Novak (and other sensored) brushless systems.

The axles JIA referred to are for use w/ the Novak brushless motors or similiarly set up motors. Not all brushless motor will mount up like a 540 type motor. JRH's Revolvers bolt right up to the stock axles.

Yes, too ESC's are required. They are more powerful than the lathe motors. Wheel speed will depend on gearing and number of cells!

Are you worried at all about the spinning can and it contacting rocks?
I know all of my motor cans are scratched up pretty bad.

Do you plan on adding a motor skid?

Yeah, a skidplate is mandatory for this application. No big deal if a stationary can gets hit by the rocks, but since this is a moving part the skid is a must.

JonRobHolmes and myself were talking about that this weekend. I told him I'd pound something out of aluminum, but I could also use some delrin or kydex.

I think brushless will be the way to go for almost all electric RC aplications over the next few years. Nice to see someone breaking in the future on the rocks.

That's why I like it here. Learn something new all the time. I'll have to keep that in mind if I am lucky enough to find a brushless setup.

well,

finally someone did it. i've been DYIN' to try it... but could never bring myself to pull the trigger...... 55 lathes work great so until they kick the commutator bucket or something, i've stuck with 'em.

about dual esc's... while it is the preferred and ultimate to setup... its possible you might get a single ESC to work BOTH brushless motors. there's only one ESC i know of that could feasibly do it. or at least only one i know of that has any chance in cold hell of working like that--- Kontronik JAZZ. it is capable and works with dual brushless motors, but its really only been tested in 'flight' applications. in a crawler the loads on the motors are different at different times, and i'm not sure how the JAZZ would care for that. that's part of the reason i haven't tried to go brushless yet in my Clod. JRB's revolvers are AWESOME, have 1 in my PTI Goliath..... can't imagine how sweet 2 would be. Torque is simply impressive from this motor... ESPECIALLY on 3 cell lipo.

can you shoot a little vid? that would be very cool to see and hear.

I may be incorrect, but i don't think you can run any more than one motor on any one brushless esc. Brushless motors require feedback to operate properly. The speed control won't know what to do if you have two motors providing feedback whether they are sensored or not.

Especially since the clod is prone to stall that will throw off the esc having 2 motors not in sync, I would think it would be hard for one esc to figure that out, but I could be wrong. I like the 2 esc setup idea though
