I build a comp ready blackjack...this could be scary

After driving bi-eep's blackjack I had to have something more competitive then my tuber whom happens to be a tad bit over weight. I few PM's here and there and then next thing I knew there was a blackjack waiting for me at the door this morning  Thanks FrankyRizzo "thumbsup"

Specs:
Blackjack chassis
TLT axles stuff with all the goodies; cvds, aluminum knuckles, just waiting for RCP to get some more R&P's in.
Axial trans with a JPCustom's 35t Warrior
Mini losi lst shocks
Mayhem Beadlocks w/ some Proline Hammers 8)

Put the chassis together and am going to run to the post office to see if any goodies have shown up and then start on the links. I'm excited

welcome to the army!

Grizzly4x4 03-27-2008 05:58 PM

Sweet parts list. Looking forward to the build. "thumbsup"

TxCruzr 03-27-2008 06:44 PM

There was nothing waiting at the post office so I'm done for the day. Hopefully tomorrow.

Forgot to mention what electronics I'll be using. Have a super rooster and a old tq3 that I will be using for now. Holmes is out of the puller motors so I'm going to use the 55t for now and hopefully will stumble upon a little more powerful brushed motor soon.

bi_eep 03-27-2008 11:55 PM

Didn't take long for you to convert!

TxCruzr 03-28-2008 12:29 AM

Someone has to beat you and put you in your place

TxCruzr 03-29-2008 03:42 AM

Got the upper link mounts, rod ends, and a few other goodies in from RCP today (wow they have fast shipping ).
Started working on the links after I got off of work and let me tell you, 2am is the perfect time to be working outside. There was steady entertainment of drunks, burnouts, and cops "thumbsup"

Only got the lower links done but will finish up the rest tomorrow/today when I decide to wake up.

Lower links bent up....
http://tamor.us/members-rigs/albums/...0056.sized.jpg

I drilled a hole to get a little extra silver solder in there and make sure these things aren't coming apart...
http://tamor.us/members-rigs/albums/...0058.sized.jpg

Filled in the hole and also around the edge...they're in there good 8)
Front's are a tad longer then the rear, and by tad I mean barely a tad. With the rear axle tilted up a little, the rear lower link mount is closer to the chassis and the shock mount is further from it compared to the front. Tried to take this into account by guesstimating and it actually worked out

[Emeril]BAM!!![/Emeril]
Sitting on all 4's
http://tamor.us/members-rigs/albums/...0062.sized.jpg

From the top. Still debating on how I'm going to do the uppers.
http://tamor.us/members-rigs/albums/...0065.sized.jpg

Yay for triangulation :-P I notched out the corners of the skid to allow the links to fit inside the frame rails and not rub or bind on anything.
http://tamor.us/members-rigs/albums/...0067.sized.jpg

As she sits now, wheel base is at 12.612938612938612983....or something like that.

USPS shows that I should have another package in tomorrow, hopefully it's my shocks and transmission goodies. For some great reason, yeah right, they seem to enjoy shipping my packages through town, 100 miles the other direction and then bring it back

TxCruzr 03-29-2008 03:39 PM

Finished the uppers and the steering. Probably won't be ready for the comp tomorrow unless the transmission is sitting at the post office. Everything else I can pull from my other rig if I need too.

sitting just about at ride height, going to have to make a few adjustments once I have the shocks...
http://tamor.us/members-rigs/albums/...0070.sized.jpg

you know, forget it, we're going shockless

Sweet looking setup, I really like those chassis'. "thumbsup" And you gotta love rudy's too...mmm......

bi_eep 03-31-2008 12:10 PM

hurry up! Time is ticking for the next comp. I'm starting on version 4. Ordered some new badlands to start it off. I really was tempted to get the hammers but you called it first!

TxCruzr 03-31-2008 01:16 PM

I'm trying, I'm trying. USPS still shows my big box of goodies somewhere in the commie state of cali
I don't trust the motor I have laying around (I seem to remember it smoking before ) so I went ahead and got one of JPCustom's warrior motors and a bec.
Reading up on how to add end points to a tq3. Would it help me get more steering or would it mainly let me fine tune what I have now? For the most part it looks like I'm getting all the steering the front axle will allow so I may wait before I ruin my controller :)

Thanks for making me hungry, I could go for some rudys right now. Depending on what part of houston you are on, you have Goody Co. though. I could kill for six of everything they have right now

Thats actually what i've been trying to figure out for the last 3 days. I cant seem to find the right pots at radioshack either. I am wanting to do a pot for front steering and 2 pots for my dig. You be the gunea pig.

I just wish the rest of the parts would show up in the mail, I'm at a stand still. I guess I could study for my test tomorrow but what fun is that :?

bi_eep 04-02-2008 01:05 AM

Find out what your going to do about EPA's? Here's another idea, I might be going this route if I can't find any pots in aggieland.

http://www.servocity.com/html/180o_servo_stretcher.html

TxCruzr 04-02-2008 09:33 AM

That's pretty cool.
I'm going to houston this weekend and going to try to stop at a small electronics shop that my dad always goes to. They have a bunch of small random stuff so maybe they'll have the parts. If they do, I'll get a few extra for you.

TxCruzr 04-06-2008 09:14 PM

Got a bunch of goodies in the mail friday but go figure had to leave town and not get any work done.
Got the trans build and mounted and some maxx shafts installed 8)
Body is in the paint shop, I'll get a pic of it in a little bit. So far it looks alright. Some parts of the masks started to wrinkle up for some reason but I think it's going to work out...I hope

http://tamor.us/members-rigs/albums/...0078.sized.jpg

TxCruzr 04-06-2008 10:32 PM

Ok, for my first paint job with actual graphics, I'm excited

The only place I really had any screwups was the front windshield mask. It started wrinkling after I started painting but other then that, I'm happy with everything else.

Can't wait to compare the hammers and badlands.

Were you able to get some pots from houston?

TxCruzr 04-07-2008 12:00 AM

I think they'll do very well at bee creek, hope so at least. I found the mother load of pots and every other random piece of electronic parts and equipment ever imaginable this weekend. Once I finish this up I'll probably tackle that next. I got you a few pots if you want to give it a try also.

CrawlerGraphics 04-07-2008 09:21 PM

Enjoying your build of the Blackjack.
I just ordered one along with the mini lst shocks.
I'm curious what the length of your upper and lower links are?
Just something to give me a starting point.

Thanks

Thanks, the lower links are right about 4" from eye to eye. For the uppers it depends on how much you want to clock your axles. Build the lowers first and then prop up the axles like you want them and measure for the uppers.

I got the shocks in today and after a little struggle got the smaller rod ends replaced with some traxxas ones. Also go the motor mounted but it's about toast. Hopefully the new one will be in any day now. Also going to have to order a VF motor plate as I can see the stock one flexing without it even in a bind and I'm too lazy to build one right now.

http://tamor.us/members-rigs/albums/...0090.sized.jpg

also got the battery pack in "thumbsup"

I mounted the wheels and tires from my tuber on it so I can drive it around until the mayhems get here "thumbsup" Just messing around my apartment it does great, hopefully can take it out friday or saturday and tune it in and scratch it up some 8)

bi_eep 04-08-2008 02:11 PM

Looks great. You plan on adding wheel weights? Can't wait to see it this weekend.

TxCruzr 04-08-2008 03:03 PM

Yeah, the wheels that are on it now are weighted pretty good but once the mayhems arrive I'll mount the hammers on them and see how much weight I want to add. I think I have 8 sticks of lead weights so I can go crazy if I want  I'll probably do something like 2 on the front and 1 on the rear.
Have the batteries charging now so I can mess around with it a little more tonight.

Trying to finish up this research paper but keep getting distracted

TxCruzr 04-10-2008 03:40 PM

Little update...
I've taken it out twice so far and there are a few things I need to modify a bit to hopefully get everything I can out of the chassis. Main thing is the tires. They do alright on my heavy tuber but not so much on this lighter rig. Hopefully I'll have the mayhems next week and can get the hammers mounted. I also need to fix up a better way to mount the batteries to the front axle. I found out that there is a 3 rollover limit on the current setup. Any roll after that and stuff goes flopping around

http://tamor.us/members-rigs/albums/...0100.sized.jpg

Very stable "thumbsup" I'll add a little more weight to the fronts of the new BL's when I get them, but so far this is the most stable and capable rig I've had so far.
http://tamor.us/members-rigs/albums/...0102.sized.jpg

Was surprised I was able to take this line once the lizzards got wet

Hopefully the warrior motor and BEC come in soon too. This old 55t is on it's last leg.

I love this rig

Awesome!!!!

TxCruzr 04-10-2008 05:30 PM

Thanks, I really like that last pic

Went ahead and took care of the battery problem. Just made some 'L' brackets with a piece of an aluminum sign. That was enough to keep the straps in place, they're not going anywhere.

crappy pic

bi_eep 04-10-2008 10:13 PM

Your rig did great the other day. We need to do some more test driving this weekend. Your setup seems to be working really well. All you really need is your bec and hammers now. I got some competition now!

CrawlerGraphics 04-10-2008 10:22 PM

Is your tranny installed backwards compared to an Axial Scorpion installation.
Seems like the spur faced to the rear in the Scorpion.

TxCruzr 04-11-2008 08:55 AM

I have no idea, I didn't get the scorpion kit but just bought the tranny separate. Never seen how it mounts in a stock axial transmission. I mounted it that way so if I pony up for a VF dig, then I don't have to remount the tranny later on.

TxCruzr 04-12-2008 05:40 PM

Got the BEC and 45t Warrior in from JPCustoms in. This motor rocks. Just as much control as with the old 55t but more wheel speed. Going to take it out tomorrow and test it out.

Also took the time to mod my TQ3 to add EPA's for the 3rd channel in anticipation for dig.

http://tamor.us/members-rigs/albums/...0118.sized.jpg

I figured I'd try using 2 momentary push buttons to see how they workout instead of toggle. Still need to sand the jb that's filling in the old hole.

http://tamor.us/members-rigs/albums/...0121.sized.jpg

EPA pots...

http://tamor.us/members-rigs/albums/...0122.sized.jpg

Hardest part was trying to shove all the wires back in the case.

Long, you wouldn't happen to have a castlelink to adjust the BEC would you :)

I was looking on castle's website and came across some important information....
"Please refrain from tasting the yummy goodness of the CC BEC. Castle Creations is not responsible for any cases of upset stomach, indigestion, or other GI malfunctions as a result of CC BEC consumption. Eating a CC BEC is known to cause cancer in the state of California."
