| TLT diff repair
got sick of waiting for Tamiya parts, so i decided to do something about the busted TLT pinion shaft on my crawler (brushless motor snapped it right off). looking around the LHS for a 5mm shaft (they're everywhere) i settled on a Traxxas stub axle. cut off the plastic u-joint, lathed the shaft down to press fit in the pinion gear, then dremeled a slot in the backside of the gear to accept a 2mm pin. loctited the mess together and installed. it works! now i can crawl again (2wd crawling sucks). it doesn't have to last forever, just until the proper parts arrive. let's see if i can break it before then! |

i gave it a good bashing yesterday and it held up. my theory is that if it doesn't break in the first five minutes it won't break at all, and it withstood 3 hours so far. so now when the parts come they'll be spares for when the gears wear out.

this is an emergency, half-butted repair for a broken TLT pinion shaft: i'll walk ya thru it: 0 push the old shaft out of the Tamiya pinion gear. 1 take a Pede stub axle and cut off the plastic yoke. underneath is a flat spot on the shaft just like the Tamiya gearshaft. remove the pin. 2 cut off the threaded portion and cut the end in a lathe down to about 4mm with a slight taper. trial & error will let you get a nice tight fit in the gear. set up the taper so that the hole for the 2mm pin will sit just inside the gear. 3 get out the Dremel and cut a slot in the back of the gear to accept the pin. gob up the shaft with blue Loctite (or better yet, red Loctite, then it won't fail like this one did) and press it in using a vise. hold until the Loctite sets up (i let it sit overnite) 4 install in the truck and run it for a month. by then your LHS should have the proper Tamiya gear and you can fix it right. |

I almost had the same problem, but mine involved the Ring gear and the Pinion... Both the Ring and the Pinion are stripped... When I get all my parts, it'll be bomb-proof and new looking... Nothing like my old setup... Oh btw, sweet fab job |
